Cinnamon Toast

Cinnamon toast has been a favorite snack food of mine for years.

I have been making cinnamon toast for over 20 years. In that time, I have learned a thing or two about how best to go about making it.

First off, when I was about 5 years old, I would make cinnamon toast by using a pop-up toaster to toast the bread, then I would layer butter, sugar, and cinnamon on top.

If you make cinnamon toast like stated above, you are missing out. This blog is for you! I am about to blow your mind out the back of your face. Like this->:eek:

Ok, you will need:

Bread-You can use sliced sandwich bread yes, but if you can get some french bread, then your cooking.

Butter-Like the real stuff.

Sugar-Your preference.

Cinnamon-Your preference.

Vanilla Extract-More important than you realize.

An Oven-With a broiler setting.

A Baking Sheet-A clean one.

First, you need to decide on how many pieces of toast you would like to make. I like two at a time, so I will proceed to describe how to make two pieces. You could easily double the recipe as many times as you like.

You want the butter soft, so either set it out for a bit, or microwave it for 5 seconds, one second at a time. You do not want it melted! Just soft.

Take 2 tablespoons of the soft butter, and place it in a bowl.

Add a 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Add 1/2-3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon.

Add 1 heaping tablespoon of sugar.

Mash all this up until it is of an even consistency, I like to use the back of a spoon.

Now, that rack at the bottom of your oven that you never use, move that all the way to the top.
Make sure your middle rack, is actually in the middle.
Turn your oven on to 350F-175C.

If you are using frenchbread, give yourself a pat on the back, then slice it in 1 inch or 3cm pieces.

Lay your bread down on the clean baking sheet.

You can use the type of baking sheet with holes in it, but I would recommend using one with a solid bottom. The one with holes will provide you with cinnamon toast that is more "firm/cooked/crispy" (not sure what the right word would be) and the solid bottom baking sheet will give you cinnamon toast that is nice and soft on the bottom. So its really your preference.

Spread your pre-made delicious mixture, onto the top-side of your bread.
Be liberal with it, you should use all of the mixture for two pieces of sandwich bread.
Cover as much surface area as you can.

Bake for 7min, then switch the oven to broiler.

If you are using an electric oven, bake for 6min, then switch the oven to broiler.

Dont move the toast yet!
(smells excellent doesnt it?)

No matter what oven you ar using, wait 3 min after you switch the oven to broiler, then move the toast to the top rack.

Let it cook on the top rack, maybe 1 min. You want to be careful here, as it will burn like me. (fast and easy)

Remove your perfect toast from the oven, and allow it to cool for a few minutes, not too long though, you want to enjoy it nice and warm.

I'm a huge fan of cinnamon toast. I use a little toaster oven that has room for 4. I've never used vanilla extract and will give a try. When you do it right, the sugar and cinnamon caramelize together and it's amazing.
 
Vanilla extract? well that's new to me! I now know what I am having for breakfast tomorrow.
Would pure real vanilla work as well?

Yes Brad, you have to do it just right. Its very easy to burn when you stick it up by the broiler, too long, and its trash :(
But when it all melts together right, its epic...
