Are Wild Caught Chameleons a good idea?

This comment is based in my opinion and my own personal experience. I've been importing reptiles since 2009 and I'll share my point of view on this topic.

There are 2 kinds of WC. Long term captive kept and recently imported.

Recently imported: IMO when you buy these kind of WC, buy from the source, it is very important to get a chameleon as soon as possible after they landed. Also check how long did it take them to be shipped from Maddy; the longer they've been in transit, more chances they get in bad shape.

Once you get them, make sure you place them in a nice cage out of possible stress factors, first thing is to start getting them acclimated. I give mine long showers 3 to 4 times a day (with a mistking), to make sure they are drinking water, I personally do not like putting them on a regular shower.

I resist to touch them and very important over feed them, I go slowly on food, I only feed them once a day 4-5 pieces and observe them. Once they poop, I take a sample to be analyzed. If they look healthy and acting normal, I wouldn't start treatment until maybe a week, unless I see any worms on the feces or if the vet sees a large load of parasites, then I start it right away.

Long term captive WC:
You might find these once in a while specially from experienced breeders. Pretty much have the same caution you would when getting a CB, ask for how long have the previous owner had it, if it's been treated for parasites, etc.

In both cases, you can guess the age of the animal, specially if they are under a year; when they are fully grown, obviously, is hard to know.

IMO for some one looking for a pet, CB is the best option. For some one looking for a breeding project, and if the bloodlines available to you do not meet your requirements, then go with WC, just be aware of the risks and take your caution measures.

I think WC require some one with experience, and definitely you have to be ready for parasite treatment. Vet bills will come either with a WC or CB and parasite check and treatment is advised in both cases.

Great blog Edgar. This is great information. I follow these same rules. I believe that someone looking for a pet should stay away from wc and go with a cb chameleon. Wc are recommended for experienced keepers with breeding projects in mind. This is my opinion on wc reptiles in general.
