Why reptisun and not arcadia?

I'm going to be buying my next tube soon, and just wanted to see what people thought.

Are the Arcadias just too new to be well known over here? have they been found to be too bright for Chams? Or are they perfect, and something I should buy?

Please argue about it! I learn more that way :D

First off.... The T5 wont fit in your T8 fixture....;) They are 2"s shorter & use a different ballast

True! However...

I got my t8 for free when I took my cage from a lady who had already killed 2 chams and needed to stop...

So I'm not concerned :) If it's better for the cham and plants then I'd go for it.

ALSO, I think the one I linked to is not a t5 actually... so... oops.

I have a Arcadia 18 watt 6% UVB D3 T8 tube I am going to try in my new hood when I get the new cage built;) It says High performance Bulb rite on the tube...We shall see when I hook it up and Test it with my Solar Meter:cool:

To answer your original question ... I believe everyone has been useing the 5.0 Reptisun for soooooo long is because there wasnt any competion to it that worked well for chams. the MVB bulbs work well when the distance is set correct,, but they are really alot more money and need replacing almost as much. here is a good link to lighting www.uvguide.co.uk/ Add it to your Favorite sites list!

The Dutch Chameleon Society also has tested different brands of UV lighting. They primarily recommend Arcadia and Zoomed Reptisun as a good alternative. For high enclosures we also use Zoomed Powersun.
From Arcadia the compact lightbulbs are also very good. Still a high UV output for up to and over a year of use. Tubelights are advised for Zoomed Reptisun. But I believe the new cycle of compact Reptisun lights are also good nowadays.

If you come from the UK http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/arcadia-t5-reptile-lighting/ do good value bulbs and reptile accessories some of the cheapest I have found due to buying in bulk.

My set up consists of:

http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/arcadia-electronic-t5-twin-controller-24-39w-ace2u5.html - this allows me to run 39W strip bulbs from one controller unit (money saver)

I hope people dont argue with me on this but I use the 12% bulb http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/arcadia-t5-d3-reptile-lamp-39w.html my chameleon loves it and it really brings out his colours. It also allows plenty to penetrate the mesh, I have a shaded spot in my viv if he needs to get away from it. Chemeleons spend a lot of there time in tree tops not the forrest floor :) more UV exposure up there.

I also use http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/arcadia-t5-original-tropical-pro-39w-34.html the tropcal pro bulb for plant growth which gives off a nice tropical warm light (pinky sort of colour).

Hope this helps?

Yep.. from what ive heard the Arcadias are very good bulbs. The bulb I mentioned above will last up to a year & put out 6,500K light for real good plant growth too. Ive also been reading the newer 10.0 bulbs arent bad for your cham either, especially if you are filtering it thru the screen at the top of your cage;) I replaced the regular screen at the top of my cage with 1/4" squared holed hrdwr cloth and doubled my UVB into the cage... I know cause I tested it with my Solar Meter:cool:

@ Davonat

I bet thats fun with bugs :D

Well........I took 1 1/2" Scotch packaging tape, the stuff with the fiberglass strands in it & ran a layer all the way around the edge of the Hrdwr cloth and bugs cant get out...

I do have quite thick foliage in there, and I feel like unless he is on top of the plant he doesn't really get any UVB exposure (although I don't have a solarmeter so that's conjecture) so I'm just concerned. Would it be ok to use the 12% or 10.0? It's an 18x18x36 cage and a 5 month old Panther

I wish some of the light experts would chime in on this....as I am just going on what other people told me. Where is Anne when you need her?? All I know as some ..... the light people I know of,, Are going to the T5 Arcadia's which I believe are 12%. You could contact Todd @ Lite your Reptiles.... He is the JEDI master of the light realm.

Arcadia have 6% High output t-5s as well. That is what i will be using. I think that is plenty for now being in only a 4ft cage with minimal foliage. As I still do supplement with d3 quite a bit through various other ways. I like my exo terra repti glo bulbs better than zoo med repti sun bulbs anyways. I use everything.
