who uses a stat??
personally i wouldnt be without my dimmer stat although many people dont use them.
id just like to know about how people do without them and hear your two pence worth about them.

i'm guessing a stat is short hand for a thermostat? if that's the case, then I use thirty-five dollar electronic thermostats with temperature probes for all my reptiles' basking spots. They make life so much easier! the model i use is designed for growing plants or something but i've never had any problems with them and i've had the oldest one for about three years.

I think you will find an easier setup by adjusting the wattage of the bulb, and changing the distance from your basking spot. Closer for higher temps, further away for cooler temps.

It can be tricky to setup a thermostat probe right in the basking spot, and if it gets covered by foliage, or by an animal, the thermo then fires up the bulb more to try and compensate, making it even hotter.
