Waxworms

Just gone to clean out the waxworm tub. Must admit, last time i checked it, there were only cocoons in there, so haven't looked in there for a couple of weeks. Gone to just get the moths and chuck the rest of the stuff out - and they have been breeding. I am shocked! (Don't know why, it's nature) - i always thought it would be hard to breed things. I am also so shocked at how tiny they are! Looks like i won't have to buy any more waxies for a few weeks! :)

Wow! How did you do it? I tried to breed waxies last year. It was all okay until the tinies hatched and it all went down hill from there! They are very good escape artists when they hatch! I ended up with one waxie about a cm long, lol! It was so small Lily wasn't interested! :D How big are the baby worms and what are you feeding them? I'd like to try breeding them again as my suggie loves them!

To be honest, it was sheer laziness! The tub i had them in (which was tiny and had a lid with airholes) had loads of sawdust and bee pollen in. I literally just left it (knocked on it's side) for about 3 weeks. I have just taken out 6 moths (and put them in Hugo's cage before realising) and left in 8 cocoons (mind you, he likes those too). It was when i saw movement, that i started pulling apart this thing of congealed pollen, sawdust and what looks like web (i thought there was a spider in there as I found a spider in the locusts bin yesterday) i saw that there were a few large waxies in there, as i looked more and more, i have found loads, from maybe 1mm in length, to the size you get in the pot. In fact, it's fair to say now that I have too many! I have just transferred them all to a breadbin. Will need to add some more sawdust and bee pollen. i just keep them covered in it and they seem to like it. Still in shock at how many there are, and how tiny they are! God knows what I will do with them all.
