Hello there!

I've spent 3 or four months being redirected to these forums after googling many questions I had about getting my first Veiled, and am very impressed with this community! Now after I have gotten him (still way too excited!) and have had some more questions that have popped up as a result of actually bringing him home, I've decided to actually sign up and be able to respond to some of the awesome threads on here!

So, here's to hoping I picked the right board to post this in!

I am a third year University student in British Columbia (BC), Canada and am owned by the tamest, chillest cat ever (I can clip his claws, give him dental gel... the whole shebang on my own), as well as several fish, a newt named Bubbles, an African dwarf frog, 2 gerbils, and, at last, my Veiled chameleon, who I have dubbed "Swatter" - after a joking conversation with my roommate about the fact that, in summer time, neither of us would have to kill spiders anymore, we would just set Swatter free. ;P Of course this was all in a joking manner! You gotta know what your reptile food has gotten into. But it was a good story that led to a name!

(As a disclaimer for those aquatic fanatics out there, all the aquatic species listed above are kept separate! Newts are territorial and the frickin frog is vicious. My fish are not with either of them!)

Super excited to cruize the forums and get to know some of you! The area I've already found most helpful is the FR section. I started with a DIY metal wire-mesh-cage thing, and then found it THE most annoying-est thing ever! After discovering that my Wesley (cat) has absolutely ZERO interest in the plant set up or the weird slow moving thing inside, I've transferred over to a small FR set up - all live plants and awesomeness!

Anyways, I'm sure more will be explained in other boards. But thank you to the staff for accepting me into this awesome community, and if anyone knows of any facebook groups or whatnot particularly in the BC area, let me know!! Im originally from AB, so I'm still pretty new to the connective world out here!

Cheers!

Hello and welcome to the forums and chameleon ownership! You have come to the right place to learn about chameleons! So you are free ranging you chameleon now with a cat? Is that what I am to understand? ugh, not so sure I agree with that one! We have had many chameleons on here over the years killed by cats. Just be careful and I would not do this if you are not home. You never know when your cat might decide to get curious and I would hate to see a tragedy happen that could have been preventable. On another note, it may prove to very stressful for your chameleon as he will view the cat as a predator. Just some things to think about. There are many groups on FB, but I don't think any of them are based in Canada. There is Chameleon Central(my favorite), Chameleon Addicts Anonymous, Chameleon Lovers, Chameleons Gone Wild.... the last one is pretty much drama and anything goes. There are moderators but they really just let anything fly on there!

Welcome to the forums and congrats on Swatter. I keep veileds and they are awesome chameleons. I love them all very much. I'm attaching my blog for new keepers below and PLEASE do not allow Wesley around Swatter. No matter how tame he is a cat's natural instinct is to hunt and kill. I can't count the times I've read on here where someone's cat seriously hurt or killed their chameleon.

Oh geesh! No! Wesley is only in the same room as him when I am there, and even then he stays on the floor while I'm on a stool cleaning the cage that is 5ish ft off the ground. lol Thank you for the link and the welcome!

As a minor side note... is there any way to "track" the posts that you comment on or create? Notifications that you can set up or anything? Still not familiar with the forums...

There sure is. I can’t remember what the forum default is on thread subscriptions (it’s been ages since I signed up here) but you can change it under the Edit Options category in your User Control Panel (User CP) which is located on the top left of every page.

UserCP > Edit Options > Messaging & Notification > Default Thread Subscription Mode. There you can change it to Instant, Daily and Weekly emails. Don’t forget to click save changes waaaay at the bottom of that page.

Welcome MsCham! I'm new too, you commented on my cage last night. It's funny what you say about the frogs and the newts and fish. The reason I got started in this whole reptile/amphibian world is one of my bosses brought in tadpoles and she thought it would be fun to put them in with the beta fish and they would live together. I told her they wouldn't and took about 10 of them for myself and she was very disappointed when the fish instantly ate the tadpoles!

Yeah... Ive done the aquatics thing for about 5 years now in 3 different tanks and it's actually almost stupid how intricate the balance has to be between species. People think it's the easiest thing to keep fish - and it is, if you keep ONE type of fish, but as soon as you start mixing them you have to think about the aggressiveness and territorial nature of certain types, different temperature preferences, the different food types (ex: I will feed my newt bloodworms, but any type of fish that is in with the newt will eat the bloodworms before he gets to them) and something as simple as a bottom feeder I found out was more aggressive than I thought and will chase around small fish even though it can't actually do any physical harm other than frighten the poor beast. Then you get into the PH stuff... and ugh.

Reptiles, in my mind, are so much easier! You get the light, you get the proper set up of a cage or FR, and I mean the food is probably the hardest part once you are actually set up - but there is only ever ONE! Its beautiful!! (The people who do tackle the challenge of having more than one, in my mind, are crazy! I could never do that! But I will accept that as my limitation! :p)

But thank you for the welcome! :)

Welcome to the forum-
My daughter has a cat named Wesley too- though he thinks he's the Dread Pirate Roberts -

That's great!! Mine is actually the lover-boy side who says "As you wish" until it's food time! hehe Then the pirate comes out!
