Would work to use a vicks humidifier for a mister during the day....and would it hurt to put salt in it to make it mist more or would that be bad for the chameleon and the plant?

i have ultrasonic vicks humidifier, so far i'm liking it.
But, i never use it to mist directly in my cham's cage.
The fog freaks him too much. So, I just use it during winter to raise the humidity of my whole room.
I would NOt put salt in the humidifier, it probably will break the thing pretty soon. I would imagine that it's not good also for your cham.

I have seen alot of these humidifier set ups. And as far as salt goes...depends on how much it steam without the salt. Water out here is super soft, so a lil salt can help. But over doing it will fog em out!

um no if you have a good humidifier you are only "suppose" to use clean filtered water, of course everyone uses tap, but its result is suppose to be a white powdery residue.
and you will have plenty of fog with the right ultrasonic humidfier 30.00
from there you take pvc and flow all the output to a closed tube and drill tiny holes all in it so it defuses the fog at the top of your cage and fills your enclosure, it looks sweet and you can run it all day should you choose if you keep it clean, but its best when you do it sporactically
this is my schedule
i like to have it start in the morning with my lights
but then midday i like to turn it off and feed
the feeders hydrate on the moist leaves as they free range
let it dry out, mist good by hand, let it dry out again
run the humidifier and let the timer kill it at night, and then that way it will start your cycle for you again.
only down side is refilling them

I have seen a few people using the Vick's brand. Not sure about the salt.

Its clearly stated in the misters instructions salt is OK to add if steam is not being produced! Holla!

steam comes from water boiling i.e. being hot, fog or mist comes from there being being moisture in the air, much more than the air can handle. want to tell the difference, boil some water up and feel the steam, should be hot and has the ability to burn, mist is cool to the touch and just feels wet. my advice, just buy a better humidifier. spent some money on one myself, and i really dont have to do anything about humidity anymore. let that roll on for about 3 to 4 hours over the course of the day, mist a little and use the dripper and nothing more is needed.

I had a humidifier outside of my cage when my panther was a baby, and after moving him into his permanent larger enclosure, i have tested out putting the humidifier at the base of the plants. It is not a vicks, and doesn't spit out as much water/humidity, its just more of a warmer finer mist. Sven absolutly LOVES it, and will sit above the stream on top of this plant in the afternoons. I am a bit worried this might not be a good idea if you fail at maintaining/cleaning it, but because it is a relatively expensive unit, it has a great filtration and cleaning system.
In hawaii i had the smaller vicks that spat out a ton of moisture, and I had to clean that thing almost daily from the gunk buildup it was forming inside the unit. I would not DREAM of using that thing again as it was just a festering gob of bacteria.
From my observations, its a decent addon to keep consistant humidity in, but its not a replacement for a mist system by any means. Sven appears to be using it to aid in cleaning his eyes, and hydrating all the moving parts

only problem with that bro, is these need to be refilled every 1-2 days depending on how you are running it and how much you are allowing to escape
that sounds pretty stressful to a cham if you ask me, pulling a huge humidifier in and out of his cage daily?
imho you are better putting it on a shelf and routing the mist with a closed pipe system with tiny holes drilled
the pvc size is 1 1/2 light duty(sink drain fittings)

I fill it every morning actually, its part of my daily routine.If any water is left in the unit, i dump it out and refill with fresh cold water. Because of the positing in the cage, and the size of it (30x30x48) it is in between the two larger plants in his cage- its transparent to him really, and a non issue in my mind.
I actually tried your suggestion first, i had flexible piping that ran from the base of the unit out through a hole, and up the back that enabled the mist to fall from above. The project was a failure, the humidity was building up on the bends of the piping and just dumping back down onto the unit.
This was essentially a temporary solution/test until i ordered my misting system. It is currently in the mail and should be here by this weekend. I will most likely remove the humidifier completely, as it will not be needed. Overall, i consider the experiment a success, PENDING you are OCD about cleaning and maintaining the humidifer.
Again let me reiterate that i would NEVER consider using a cheap $10 crapola humidifier such as the vicks for this. The humidifier that I purchased is top of the line with automatic digital timers, a felt filtration system that is replaceable, and 100% silent operation.

yea i'm with you on that, it took some fine tuning to get the mist to stop collecting in the pipe, but it actually worked out to my advantage, because now the humidifier drips on both ends of my pipe that runs the cage and every hour or so a good amount of water will build up and it starts dripping like crazy until enough has left the pipe and then it drips slowly again, its almost perfect.
i just wanted to say this since i'm off for the day
i guess theoretically a fogging humidifier could be used, but i would never substitute that with good old fashion misting, the sole purpose of the humidifier is for supplemental
e.g. we are sleeping in the morning and there naturally dew on the leaves in the morning, so the humidifier comes on to simulate early morning humidity
