Tongue problem

Sincs last week my veiled male has a problem with his tongue. We have several possibilities on what it caused.

* lack of vitamines
* got stuck and it's a problem with the muscles in the tongue
* or an infection

What would you suggest to do? We decided to wait a few days to see if it gets better, he still wants to eat and still drinks. Nothing else can be seen on him.

Only thing is I have to feed him by hand now, when he tries to shoot his tongue he spits out the logust and stretches his tongue, tries to put it back in its mouth in the right way but it's not going quite well.

Any tips? I'm careful with giving him extra vitamines and we don't have a specialist vet around here.

I have problems describing the problem because of my English, but I hope it's clear.

Howdy Esther,

If you want to look into vitamin issues and tongue problems, here are a couple of old posts that talk about it.

Tongue Issue

Tongue Retraction Problems (thoughts)

Mechanical damage is always a possibility.

An infection would be my last choice of your 3 ideas unless an infection is visible on or around the tongue area.

If you had a vet available then they could knock-out the chameleon and extend his tongue to look for any visible damage or even something as simple as a piece of debris stuck along with the tongue.

Thanks for your reply, I'm a bit late, busy weekend

Yesterday I closely watched him and after giving him extra calcium and vitamins we noticed now it's a serious infection. His tongue is so thick and weak he's almost choking!

My boyfriend is taking him to the vet today. I'm only there in the weekend at the moment so thats hard for me...Wish I could do something..

Anyways, his tonque is really really red and it's just a piece of flesh right now that he throws out of his mouth all the time to be able to breath.
Hopefully it can be solved with anti-biotics or desinfectant, hope he will be ok...Would be devasted when he would die or loses his tongue..

good luck I hope he recovers.
if the vet has to remove the tongue the cham may still grab food from a feeding cup.
