river birch branches and cleveland pears?

I was reading some threads from some very respected forum members about the use of outside tree branches. Apparently, they feel bleaching and baking branches is a waste of time. Therefore, can anyone tell me if river birch branches and bradford/cleveland pear branches are safe and non toxic? I am just going to use fesh cuttings and skip bleaching and baking. I will rinse and sand them clean but that's it. Thanks everyone.
