As promised I went out of my way to stop by Reptile Depot to clarify some discussion that was taking place earlier. It was pointed out that Reptile Depot was selling chameleons out of cages that were displaying the a picture of Xerxis, one of Screameleons Red Bar Ambilobe breeders...This is true. It was thought that maybe they had obtained an original of the pic as it did not have the Screamelons logo, or the name of the sire... This is not true. I find it most disturbing that it is clearly a laminated pic from the computer printer, And the positioning of the Logo, and the sire name, being at the top and bottom of the pic, allowed Reptile Depot to crop out the logo and sire name, stealing all credit that should be given to the rightful owners of the photo. Guess they like the pic, but didn't want to advertise for the competition. I think this is wrong... But is an issue to be taken up between Screameleons and Reptile Depot. I just wanted to confirm what was going on. They did have a few left...Several that appeared to be around 2 weeks old. And one I could tell was female that I thought to be maybe 1-2 months. On this rack was displayed the photo they Jacked from Screameleons. This was everything I was able to gather prior to talking to anyone there. I started talking to a guy, who seemed nice enough, and inquired about their Chams. I asked what kind of panthers they were? He said they were all Ambilobe, and that the older one was female and from a separate clutch. It confirmed what I had thought... And made me somewhat confident in their ability to sex the Chams. I browsed around for a bit and will say that I seemed impressed by the management, as they had two guys busy at work cleaning out cages and feeding and watering. Rare to see in a Pet Shop. I did not see any sick herps, and the husbandry seemed under control. They actually keep their Chams in Alum Screen cages...Which I was also yet to see in any Pet Shop. Then on my way out I popped the question that needed to be asked over all the others..."Is that a pic of the sire?" He answered "No, that is just what they might grow up to look like." I said Thanks and left, after purchasing 100 supers for $10 bucks, and some feeder mice for my snakes. I also noticed that they had any empty cage with a laying bin and a hole dug. I asked and apparently they have had success breeding carpets for several years. All in all I was fairly impressed with what the store had to offer, the condition the animals were kept in. The manager I spoke with seemed to know what he was talking about, and the prices on their supplies were actually better than what I have seen in other pet stores, but not online.
That is the info... Reptile Depot to me seems like a good place to buy supplies, Would I buy an animal there, If I was looking for a pet to buy and not breed, and if they would drop the price like 30%, maybe. In my opinion they are overpriced for not being a reputable breeder, and giving no record of lineage with your purchase. He told me they sold an Adult Nosy Be for $900... Robbery. Do I think it is cool what they did with Screameleon's picture...Not at all.
Anyway...Wanted to get that out there...
EDIT: I would recommend buying from one of the site sponsors anyday, whether it be a breeder or family pet, simply because of the reputation they have established in the community, safer bet... My two cents.
