pothos, golden?

Snatch

i just came back from home depot and i bought for my chameleon a pothos "golden", was wondering if it would be safe for my chameleon. I know pothos arent toxic but im not a plant guy but i know there are many kinds of plants and was wondering if the "golden" was good?.. hope i dont sound stupid, rather be stupid with a healthy cham then not look stupid with a dead cham.. then again having a dead cham would make me feel pretty damn stupid :)

Epipremnum aureus (pothos) are golden pothos. They are only poisonous if eaten in large quanities. But then again there are some members here who use them exclusively and have had them stripped down with no problems to their chams.

Hmm i just saw this post on another thread from today. So i am not sure. They list golden pothos as Scindapsus aureus. but this other link from aspca.org for golden pothos is http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pro_apcc_toxic_goldenpothos which is the pothos most people use in their enclosures. I'm sure it all comes down to mislabeling

On the spca list of toxic plants it lists devils ivy as "Epipremnum aureum" on the toxic list

Blue Beast Reptile states this

"GOLDEN POTHOS (Scindapsus aureus) - not to be digested in large quantities"

http://www.bluebeastreptile.com/plantlist.htm

ASPCA lists "Scindapsus, Philodendron spp" as toxic as well

It's best to be certain as to the type of plant you purchase. Wallmart and sometimes homedepot type stores mislable plants.

I do know that many people use pathos in there enclosures.

Hope this helps a little. I am not sure what plant you were actually going to purchase and it seems neither did you. I would play it safe and pass.

Golden Photos/ scindapsus aureus/ epipremnum aureus is perfectly fine for your chameleon.
Do know that they have oxalate contents that can block your chameleon's calcium absorption when eaten too much.
Generally, if you have other plants in your enclosure, your chameleon will tend to eat that plant instead of pothos. I have 2 bushy pothos, i medium size umbrella tree, and 1 big hibiscus. My chameleon only eats the ficus and the hibiscus leaves.

It is not a stupid question at all.
Because Golden Pothos does have a poisonous cousin called Philodendron that looked almost identical.

Dodolah. Philodendron is a genus of hundres upon hundreds of plants. Some of which contain toxic or less desired properties for chameleons. Pothos is a close relative.

The plant is fine to use, it's supposed to be able to cause problems from the high oxalate content as dodolah described, however there are several veileds who have been reported to consume it large amounts on a daily basis.

Thank for clarifying that up, Will.
The one that i meant is the heart leafed philodendron.
