Plants in cages

If you put a live plant in the cage do you need to cover the dirt in the pot or is it alright by itself?

I usually put rocks on top of the dirt because my cham will eat it otherwise .

I also bought a piece of plastic canvas from Joann's and cut it to fit the pot, and then cut a hole out for the plant. That way, the bugs can't burrow into the soil, and if my cham decides to walk on it, she won't eat the dirt.
I've never seen her walk on it, but you never know. Also, if she poops on it, it's easy to clean.
The plastic canvas comes in a couple of different sizes, and is very cheap, under a couple of dollars. I think it's great stuff!
