Plant lighting

longer is better...

I'm sure the tube will be fine, but you'd be much better off with a longer tube (and fixture). 18" tubes are pretty puny.

48" tubes usually cost the same or a little bit more than a short one, and they give you a lot more light for the watts used. Its OK if they hang over the ends of the cage. Put some plants outside the cage too.

cool :) what type of hood did you get for it? Also does the hood have to be bigger than the light?

At Lowes, I got the brand - UTILITECH 48" T8 Fixture in black
I also got a package of 2 - 48" T8 6500k colored flourescent bulbs

Total = under $20

Then I put 1 - 48" Reptisun uvb 5.0 bulb & 1 - 6500k bulb in the UTILITECH fixture. The plants grow great and the enclosures are nice and bright.

Yes it works, I've had the plant light for three days now and my ficus looks like a totally new plant.
