Check these out!

The perfect solution for soaking up excess water if you don't have a draining system.

We struggles for weeks trying to find something that worked. Substrate = no, newspaper = no, jaycloths = no.

Stumbled across these in Wilko's and ah-ha!! Also the bed mats would work =D

Just put one in the bottom of the tank and VOILA!!

What an amazing find! How often do they need changing? Presumably you still put all the pots, etc on top. Could be a pain if they needed to be changed every day. I'd be interested to hear how effective these are. How long have you been using them? Currently I use folded up paper towels at the bottom of the back wall to catch run off.

I currently use towels which get washed and replaced daily. We seem to have a big problem now we have a dripper, so very interested to see how good they are.

We change them really depending on how much she poo's lol. But they just soak up the water and it doesn't escape anywhere. Really cheap too. IT's just really easy as they are big. Whip the old one out and just replace it.

The first thing i thought when i saw the title of this thread was "Shamwow", not as an exclamation, but as an absorbent product. I have been considering trying it, they are washable/reuseable, and here in Baltimore you can get them at Pep Boys or CVS (and yes there is a picture of Vince on the box). the SW is allegedly made in Germany, so I suppose they are available, wherever you live.

*anyone who tries this: please post results:)

OMG! You have decided what i'm going to be doing tomorrow :D
A trip to Bexley for me, thats where our closest wilkies is :( Its about 45min -hour bus ride.

Damn, you couldnt have shown us earlier?! My parents went yesterday

Well I'm sure you can get them is Supermarket's and stuff. I just spotted them on day in Wilko's and thought oh what the hell I'll give it a try =D

I am using paper towels too, but Im confused ! If your suppose to mist for a couple of minutes 2-3 times a day the paper towels are soaked & stay soaked . So how often do you need to change the towels ?
Seeing Im so new to this I want to do it right, I will be putting in a dripper later this week once I get the right live plant so the water can drip in to that, or I will have a fish tank senario at the bottom Vivarium.

I doubt those baby crib pads are reuseable or recyclable or compostable. I hate being wastefull and harmful to the environment by using things that end up in the trash.

I have been using papertowel (compostable) or terriecloth cotton towels for years (bio friendly detergent washed weekly and sun dried). A few months ago, hubby bought us some ShamWow. They stayed in the box for awhile, because I figured it was stupid gimick product. But then a water main broke out front of the house, forming a large lake and a wet basement office. I went through many big bath towels trying to soak up water. I ran out of towels. I restored to shamwow. And I was saying WOW every time. I wish I started off with Shamwow. Those things truly Suck up litres of water with ease, then you ring it out in seconds and it sucks up more. I might put these on the bottom of my cages now. I like that they are both effective and reuseable/washable.

The only problem I have found with Shamwow's is that they stink after getting all wet. They probably don't after being washed a few times, but for me, the first time getting them wet makes them smell.

Mine do not stink whatsoever - and they were used to soak up gross dirty water coming through the basement foundation wall.

Seen shamwow ads on tv here. What makes them more effective than normal chamois? are they thicker? I would think anything wet that isnt thrown away or washed and disinfected will harbour bacteria. Cham claws might stick in them?

I think Id be drilling solid bottom enclosures if I had to use them. Maybe a screen covered tray of water absorbant crystals, could be replaced, sun dried for use again?

They may be just the same as any old Chamois, I dunno having not ever had a chamois before. And yes, its important to clean whatever you use to soak up spills. I think Cham claws are unlikely to stick/catch on the ShamWow cloths. I figure screen cages are more likely to catch toenails.

Shamwows are just that, a sham.. just as good as any old towel and take forever to dry out... etc.

Still, interesting idea!
