Pather or Veiled

Ok, I am somewhat new to chameleons and have become somewhat obsessed or addicted with them over the past several weeks.

I got some ice cream from cold stone and as I walked through the PETCO next door eating my ice-cream (actually my then girlfriend wanted a beardy so i wanted to check them out) and there they had 6 or 7 2-3 inch veiled chams.

My jaw dropped at the site of them and I've wanted one ever since.

I have been researching non-stop for several weeks about everything I can read on from feeeding, habitat/enclosures, health problems, raising insects, supplies, ect, and as you can see joined these forums.

I was planning on getting a veiled chameleon, but am also drawn to the the panther species as well. Typically veiled are recommended for first time owners, but I think I would rather have a Panther.

I know there are several owners on these boards that own both, is the panther much harder to take care of then the veiled?

I think I can take care of the Panther ok, but it typically isn't recommended - What are the particular details that would allow me to take better care of a panther vs. a veiled?
Thanks
-Mike

They are virtually identical in their care except the veiled requires a little more heat in the basking spot.

If you have done your research you can handle either with ease. As long as you have the dedication to do what it takes to care for them.

I own both , plus carpets and Jacksons all are very similar in care with different temp req.

i agree, if you have done your research correctly and get set up BEFORE you get your cham you should be fine with either, panthers can be a little more finiky at times, but its really hard for me to compare because i have never had a veiled, yet... either way this board should be able to help you out with whatever you need to know. Let us know what you decide.(ps: you can get deals on your setup stuff if you know where to look, check the for sale and classifieds.)

Good choice. Not to mention that getting one from Petco isn't the best idea. Good luck with your new chameleon!

Thanks! I move into my new habitat (err house) tomorrow so look forward to helping me make sure my cage setup is perfect before I have my Cham shipped to me, thanks!

I have resently bought my first cham. I chose a Veiled over a Pather as reconmended. It turned out to be a good choice. Love him to bits now. Altough I am looking at getting a Panther lol :)

I honestly haven't really heard all that much about Veileds being recommended over panthers for first time chameleon owners, and don't think that advice is even valid.
Their care is so similar that it barely makes a difference. Where the difference does show is the price. Panthers cost significantly more. Both are great in their own way.

yah they both look great and seem like the perfect pet for me!
but that's exactly why I'm getting a panther, cause I figure if i get a veiled I'll want a panther too!

i've had both panthers and veilds and mellers all under the same husbandry with different watt heat bulbs, other than that their care and mantinence is pretty much the same,

4x2x2 cage for adults (except for mellers/parsons)
reptisun 5.0
60-75 watt heat bulb
dripper / auto mister everyday
supplemented feeders daily / every other day.
