New Cham Identification

We just got our Cham about 2 weeks ago. We were told he is an Ambilobe Panther who is almost a year old. We're sure he is a male, but not sure about age and locale. He was in a super boring cage with not enough stuff and fed mostly meal worms. We changed everything about his husbandry and diet except his cage (upgrading next month) and he seems healthy but I'm thinking his colors seem dull for an almost year old Ambilobe.
He's 11-12 inches in length. Any info you have would be helpful.

That's definitely a male. Where did you get him from? To me, it looks like he might shed soon. If you want, you can see if he'll fire up if you put him in front of the mirror so he can see himself.

Is there any possibility he could be WC? In specimens that were recently imported, they are dull until their first shed and then they start looking really good again.

He is not WC as far as we know. The person we got him from said she got him from a breeder that she knows. She didn't give a name of the breeder. He did shed the first week that we had him and that pic was taken after the shedding. I'm still unsure of age and whether he is actually an Ambilobe.
We have tried show him in the mirror and he gets some light teal/blue coloring in places, but not a lot. I'm assuming if he's almost a year old, he should have more colors, unless he is a different type of cham. Wondering if his previous husbandry and diet would have any effect on his color maturation.

This is a pic of him fired up. That's as much color as he gets, which is beautiful as it is, and we don't really care about coloring as long as we have some idea of what type of cham he is.

From the picture he doens't look fully developed which would lead me to say he is younger than a year. As for local, until he really colors up it will be hard to say. Right now he doesn't look ambilobe but he still easily could be.

I would keep doing what your doing and provide him with better care than the previous owner and you might be pleasantly surprised what he is able to develop. The proper feeders, supplements and lighting can all play a huge factor in the overall health, growth and coloring of a chameleon.

Karma is looking great! Your doing an awesome job with him.

If I had to give a guess I would say Ambanja. The vibrant blues in his bars, the lighter blues on his body and his longer ronstra are all characteristics of an Ambanja. There is always a chance of him being a cross and containing additional locals in him but without having the linage it would be impossible to tell for sure.

Thanks! He seems happy. Well as happy as a chameleon can seem ;)

My research led me to Ambanja also. Thanks for the input :)
