okay i just got my first cham today just a few min ago, i havent touched him and he seemed really colourfull in the container he was in. problem is as soon as i put the open container in his new house and he climbed up but hes all black and brown now like he is going to die =[, i want to leave him alone and get settled in but im also worried like there is pure black stripes on him =[ . any advice? :(

Usually darker colors mean that they are cold, however, since he has only been in his new home for a couple of minutes, just let him get adjusted to the new environment. It is completely new and its probably stressing him out at the moment.

It would be helpful if you filled out this to make sure nothing is wrong with your set up:

Chameleon Info:

* Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?

* Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
* Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
* Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?

* Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Chams get very stressed from shipping and are generally either really fired up or really dark when they arrive. If it's cold they will be very dark. Make sure there is a nice basking spot for him to warm up. They will be dark in their new enclosure due to the new environment for a few days to a week sometimes. Also when they bask they make themselves dark to absorb he heat just like when they are cold in general. Fill out the form and keep us posted.

At six months his basking spot should be around 83-85. He's probably super cold!

ok i just switched on up my lights for basking from my other lizards and its showing its 80-81 now he is looking more dark now and he looks like he is ducking like he is trying to avoid the light and its not a CFL

Good advice.....give him time to settle in. He is most likely super stressed from shipping and his new environment. He sees you as a predator at the moment. His lights should be off by now for him to be getting into his sleeping routine.

Cover his cage with an old towel on 1 or 2 sides to give him privacy and a sense of security over the next week and keep his basking temp at around 83 and mist him well so he doesn't get dehydrated.....the first few days is always rough on a new cham and new cham owner :)

thank you so much i will get a towel right now =] and should i leave his night light basking moonlight blue glow thing on for the night or turn all lights off completely?

You said your low temps are between 60 and 65. If this is the case, there is no need for any heat at night.

Chams need darkness for sleep. No light at night. If you need extra heat i would recommend getting a space heater.

ok well its been just over a day and he seems to do fine i see him eat only 3 times but when i mist i never seen him drink

my new guy is the same way...i didnt see im drink for a couple days when i got him....but now i see him drink all the time..they just have to get settled in....just keep checking his urates and make sure they are white.....

okay i have some of his poo but looks kinda dry now and its brown and i think the urate is like an orange tint and hard not sure if im looking at the right thing.

OMG HOLY ok so he is asleep and the brown and black on him are all gone and replaced with white and a very light baby sky blue and his tail has a ton of red dots on him sooo cute!

when its orange or yellowish that means he is dehydrated....just mist him longer...mine were the same way when i got them....just give him some extra misting.....they are amazing when they sleep!!! :D

Male Nosy Faly

Lots of extra mistings will help. Be sure the enclosure has time to dry out in between mistings. Soon enough his body will be a beautiful clean white with thick blue bars. Those red spots will eventually cover his entire body. Each time he sheds he will get more and more vibrant. Enjoy your new little guy.
