My four month old male veiled just started gaping allot his humidity is 70 basking 85 eats very well crickets dusted daily with calcium his uvb is brand new and is a reptisun 5.0
Maybe he might be starting to shed, and is attempting to loosen the skin he will be shedding. Mine did that when he was about to shed, he'd open his mouth and yawn and gape so the skin would come loose.
But, if he seems to be staying still with his head pointed up, mouth open, bubbling out of his mouth, it might be an upper respiratory infection. Look for bubbles on his mouth, listen to see if he makes any noise when he breathes. It might be a URI then take him to the vet.
Salt deposit is normal, don't worry about that. Unless there is a LARGE amount of salt, it doesn't really matter.
If there are no bubbles, he is not making noise or wheezing, he is probably just stretching out his chin for shedding just watch on him and listen for any unusual noises . If you cannot hear him breathing or coughing or wheezing, I wouldn't worry.
I measure the basking temp with a infrared temp gun. He stopped gaping now. He just rests on his belly with mouth closed sorry it took a while to reply
I agree with Jimmy. My guy started gaping today and rubbing his neck and face on the bamboo poles. He's about due for a shed and is whiteish looking. Of course you still want to keep an eye on him just in case.
