my dog's hurt paw

So I noticed today that one of pads of my dog's paw was swollen and red. It is rather hard and feels similar to a callous. I took a couple pictures to show my buddy, and figured I would post them here to see if anyone has any thoughts about it.

She hasn't been running or doing anything out of the normal. I noticed it was a little wet from her licking it, but I have not seen her keep weight off or limping.

I will watch it in the next couple days and take her to the vet if it does not get any better.

My thoughts are....I should be able to help.....maybe after I finish my course and I have worked with a vet (hopefully who specialises in reptiles) I would have some idea what to say......
Anyway, I saw an excellent program about dogs on tv the other day. I'm waiting for it to come online at itvplayer and I'll post it on the forum.
1 hr of information and inspiration it was.....:D

do you have stinging ants, or bees ? one of our dogs got stung and that is what it looked like , but after like 2 weeks- if she /he licks it alot, they also call them "hot spots" - the dog will start to lick the spot, then it becomes habit - but it does not really look discolored - like a hot spot , their saliva from excessive licking can make the hair change color- like an orangish/brown look- but I would take him to the vet if it seems to get worse or does not go away - hope you little pup feels better :)

I agree with the poster above me. I had a dog get stung by a bee and that is exactly what it's paw looked like.

Thanks for the replies!

There are some bees but really not many ants around, especially this time of year. My yard gets treated with pesticides which probably keeps them away.

She has had a hot spot before after she was bit by a flea and kept scratching it. She even gave herself a bald spot. Luckily it was not habit forming, and when the itch went away, she stopped scratching.

I haven't seen her actually licking her paw, but I will keep watch to see how it looks in the next days.

It's so odd how big it is and hard compared to her other paw.

I would pay attention to see if your dog is habitually licking the area. Sometimes dogs can start licking the wound and then they get lick granuloma or hot spots. I know this condition is common on the legs too.

Haha yeah I was going to mention that I am aware of how to ask for help but not too sure if that would help out lol.

Yeah I will be watching to make sure she isn't licking it. Surprisingly she does not seem to be bothered by it. I'm going to put some peroxide on it in the morning to keep it nice and clean. I also have a prescription alcohol/antibiotic spray that I used to clear up her hot spot that I may use to help too.

Thanks again for the tips!

If your trying to avoid an expensive trip to the vet, then you could get some iodine from the pharmacy, and some neosporin (not the tingly kind, just regular) hospital bandage and bitter spray.
clean the paw, put some medication on it, wrap it up, and then spray the wrap with the bitter spray so he leaves it alone.
It's better to keep it clean, than risk expensive infection!
Hope it heals soon :)

If the pad is swollen and hard it may already be infected, but you say your dog isn't limping or showing signs it hurts. What the original injury was is hard to tell, but add the possibility of an embedded foxtail, a wart, or a papilloma to your list. If there isn't an open wound I don't think putting anything on the surface will do much good.

I would go to the vet asap. My pup had a spot like that on her neck, we thought it was just a bite or hotspot bc this summer was 100+ degrees everyday, but it turned out to be a staph infection. She had to have surgery, but if we didn't catch it when we did she could have died.

I would definitely go to the vet. Better to go and not need it than to wait and be screwed... good luck
