This is Tiny Bubbles, or Bubbles for short. His egg collapsed on schedule but he lay in it unpipped for nearly 2.5 weeks. About a week after the rest of the clutch hatched he finally pipped and emerged (3 days ago). As you can see by the photos he has an underdeveloped head. I have never seen one like this thrive. Sometimes they will emerge but be very weak and limp and somewhat lifeless and only last maybe a day or so. Most often they never pip and when I open the egg I find a dead underdeveloped baby with a head such as Bubbles has. He gets his name from his size, and the bubble-like dome on his head. Here are his pics below with one of his clutchmates.
In the title I called him a preemie, which technically he is not. He went full term but he looks premature; funny shaped head, wrinkly skin, tiny body. i suppose "runt" would be a more correct term. Yet with the peculiar head-shape the term "runt" doesn't really tell the whole story of his condition. He's not just undersized, he's underdeveloped. In the pics below observe how his head compares with his sibling's.
We will see how he does and whether he will actually survive. Hope you don't mind I'm taking all of you with me on this adventure. Unfortunately, it is probably a toss up, still, at this point. But he is eating and drinking and so I am hoping for the best.
