Madagascar Conservation Groups

Motherlode Chameleon

Chameleon Enthusiast
For the holidays or if you just want to contribute to chameleon conservation in Madagascar here is a list of conservation groups I put together you can contribute too. Giving back to conservation of Madagascar forest where these chameleons came from is important. Especially If you want your chameleon to be around long term in the future. Here's a couple sites.

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust

World Wildlife Fund (WWF)

Thanks Jeremy, now I just need to do some reading a pick one.

Laurie

This year I picked the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust to make my holiday contribution too. With this organization when you contribute you can say what you want your contribution should go towards conserving. Mine this was to conserve more Calumma parsonii habitat (Yellow Lip and Yellow Giant Parsonii habitat). As well the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust has got programs towards conserving Tortoise and Lemur species in western and eastern Madagascar that inadvertently conserves chameleon species from eastern and western Madagascar. I hope that helps you decide. As well they send you a news letters about programs you are apart of when you contribute.

Kind Regards

This is awesome information! Thank you! This is an amazing oppertunity to give back to the animals we love!

Do you know of any groups that work in East African? While I agree that it's important to donate to conservation in Madagascar - I've been looking for a group working with conservation in Ethiopia - but am also interested in Kenya Tanzania and Uganda.

Thanks Jeremy, you know I always count on your advice. Now I don't have to do the research. Even if quads are my love, I think Maddy needs the help the most. That is where my contribution will go.

It is an important issue and I'm happy to offer guidance about how to contribute.

Off the top of my head no. I am in contact with people who would know I can keep a look out and keep the forums posted.

Actually the WWF may have got conservation programs in Eastern Africa.

Here is another great conservation group that is conserving chameleon habitat. This is the Wildlife Conservation Society. They have got extensive conservation programs in Africa and have got a major hand in the organization of Makira Nature Preserve in Madagascar. Makira was created in 2012 and is the Islands of Madagascar's largest protected area. Which is mostly being financed by carbon credits.

Have you heard anything about this group: Madagasikara Voakajy?
http://www.madagasikara-voakajy.org/index.php

They seem to have three programs going for endangered chameleons.

Madagasikara Voakajy is definitely active in chameleon conservation and sustainable use efforts in Madagascar. The chair of the IUCN Chameleon Specialist Group was the director of the project before moving over to work for the IUCN and there are other current members of the project who are also IUCN Chameleon Specialist Group members. Madagasikara Voakajy was also the group that prepared the research that resulted in F. campani export quotas being issued a couple year ago.

Hey Everyone

With the arrival of these new Madagascar quota species it is important to give back towards conserving these species in their natural habitat. This is especially important if you want these new quotas to last. I highly recommend making contributions to a restoration program that is going on in Madagascar such as the ones on this thread.

Best Regards

With the new quotas in Madagascar happening it is important to contribute to conservation groups to make certain that forest conservation continues in Madagascar. If you are a fan of Madagascar wildlife pick a conservation group and make a contribution. These new quotas are not sustainable without continued forest conservation.
