Hi Everybody!

I was getting pretty tired of Lenny's small flexarium, so me and my dad started to build a new cage, one that will last for a long time and be used for future chams to come. My dad 2nd job is carpentry so we went all the way to make something really beautyful at the same time. So here it is...enjoy!

First we made the bottom so that it drains well...coated with epoxy resin..

And the we drilled some driftwood on a big piece of plywood...

And then use foam and sand to make a rocky effects as well as a few fake plants and some cups to put real plants afterwards...

Then we made a cabinet to put the bottom of the cage on and installed the draining pipe

Then my dad scupted a picture of Lenny on the doors of the cabinet

Built the sides...(sorry forgot to rotate)

Built the roof

Because of the size of it we made it to be a ''3-piece'' cage

Add a few plants and branches...and there you have it... a 3'x2'x5' cage

WOW! nice. It is a mansion..lol. The bottom is impressive. how did you make those slopes for water to drain. What did you use to seal it? You must have put some time and thought in to this. NICE JOB.

Haha...gee thanks...didn't think I would get so many replies in so little time.

well to make the slopes you have to cut triangles (right angles and lengths) and glued them together upside down. My dad builds kayaks so we had alot of epoxy resin which is very strong and waterproof to coat.

We started about a month ago but only worked on it for 2-3 weekends...my dad is pretty good with wood so it didn't take too long. He carved the chameleons in about as much time that it took me to mow the lawn.

holy crap! Very nice... Should change his name to KING Lenny...

If only chams knew how much we spoil them :D

I just hope he's going to be happy in it...I just put him in this morning so he's in the ''where the hell am I??'' phase

So, when are you and your father going into business and selling those?

My dad builds anything people ask, he as built kayaks, guitars, roll top desks, grand father clocks, etc. I'm sure if anybody approached him to make another cage he would. But the shipping costs would be huge because it is so heavy and big. I on the other hand can't even build a bird house, so I was just the assistant in the whole thing.

My dad always told me, "you're only good as your help". But he always tried to make me feel better for not knowing how to do anything. :D

You know what might not be too bad to ship would be custom doors for the bottom cabinets? or custom fronts for a canopy? or even the bottom?

I think most of us know someone locally who could help on the actual construction but it is those extra touches that make it beautiful and pratical.

People tell me i have a lot of time on my hands, But I would have to say for this .. time well spent, your dad is a well gifted man.. very nice... i want to tear mine apart and start over..

Now you know how boring some of our lifes are...and how addicted we are to this forum.... is like a daily routine...wake up...coffee....then Chemeleon Forum..lunch...then chemeleon forum.... dinner and then chameleon forum again....:D

I am totally blown away by that cage and the effort involved! You must submit your pictures and the outline of the process to Reptiles Magazine. They have a "Show your Stuff" category, although I must say, it deserves a lot more space and you just might get that. Excellent...you deserve some recognition :)
