I do the same. I just make sure it doesnt get too overcrowded. Throw in paper towel tubes so they can spin, and handfuls of leaves at a time. I've been sitting on 200+ since they were small, and they are almost all done spinning now.

I've had maybe 10 die off. Just get rid of them quickly when they do die.

i order some from mulberry farm and they just arrived. I care for them in a container with holes on top and seperate there chow to make sure the silk worms are eating right. I clean my container everyday since they are messy worms. Maybe some one out there can give me more advice for caring for them. Also do they only eat the chow food or other food. Thanks

If you are feeding the chow, keeping the fras from the chow can be hard. A good think to buy is gutter gaurd from HD or Lowes. It is a thicker and wide mesh the worms will climb on. place the chow on the mesh and the silks will climb up and eat. as they poop... it falls to the bottom.

If you have HW cups... the mesh inside is a good example of what you are looking for.

Althought they primarily eat Mulberry leaves, or chow, I have been successfull substituting dandelion leaves up to 50% of the time, after the silkies are at least a couple cm in size. Because I usually have to use chow rather than fresh mulberry leaves, I especially like to feed the silkies fresh dandelion prior to feeding them to the chameleons.

i used to raise silkworms for science fairs :) a really cheap way to house the worms is to use those boxes that In-N-Out gives you with the fries and burgers in them (do you know what im talking about?) and put like two handfuls of mulberry leaves in there, and if you live in socal you can go shake the silkworms off the mulberry trees :D basically free! well....besides the In-N-Out :p

huh? you mean silkworms as in Bombyx Mori? in the wild?
They have been domesticated for thousands of years. Their wild counterpart has basically extinct.

well when i was like 6, i would go to a mulberry tree and pick the leaves, and the silkworms would be on the leaves :) and i would feed them and let them spin when they got old enough, then they become moths and i would let em go :)

The IN N OUT tray is a good idea! and if ya felt like taking something that isn't yours I bet the red plastic trays they give out would work well too!

I use plastic trays from frozen food purchased at costco....

as for wild silks.... in claremont?!

hey you know where claremont is! woohoo :D but yes, i used to go around claremont and shake the worms off the trees :) why is everyone getting all excited about this?

edit: im not sure, because i hear rumors about people who bought silkworms, and released them on the mulberry trees here to establish a population :p but theres a chance they could still be wild
