Hissing while shedding

Chameleon Coco

Hi, I recently bought a veiled chameleon and I know they are supposed to shed but he keeps opening his mouth and hissing. Is that normal? Could it be that he is in pain? Is there something I can do to help?

Can you actually hear him hissing? Sometimes they open their mouths really wide to pop shed on their jaw. He could just be upset. Shedding is not a particularly pleasant experience.

Could be reacting to you or something in the room. How new is he to you? Have you changed his enclosure up recently? How's the temp under basking bulb, and rest of enclosure? Does he have enough foliage to hide in and be somewhat hidden?

I bought this chameleon 2 days ago in a reptile show. I could hear him hissing when he first started shedding but it has now stopped. Now it's just shedding I haven't really gotten him out of his enclosure since I bought him because many people were handling him in the show and that might have caused him some stress along with the change. I actually put similar things that the previous owner had and bought the same enclosure for him. Temperature is 86, 74 on cool side and I have sprayed plenty of water to keep the humidity. He has a hibiscus red and a lilac in his habitat. Fed him crickets with calcium and he bit some of the hibiscus. A fluorescent light bulb, daylight heat bulb and night bulb. On the way home his color was green and changed to blue. Now he only stays in pinkish brown with green dots around its belly. Any tips? Is there anything that I'm doing wrong?

Get rid of the night bulb. He's probably not sleeping because of that. They don't need it, unless his room is particularly cold. If that is the case, use a ceramic heat emitter with no light output.

I would say that he needs a week or two to completely settle in to his new home. Give it some time, maintain the proper environment and he will calm down.

If he does have some shed that is not coming off, you could give him a shower.

Just some suggestions...
