Hendershot (My Nosy Be) 4 1/2 Years Old

Hendershot has been with me full time now for three years. He was the youngest panther in the bunch that my daughter left me and he's the only panther I have left out of the 6 my daughter left. Well, actually 7 but one of the females was already sick when she left them and even after several vets visits she passed away within a few days of being here.

Hendershot is still my handsome blue boy but he has been showing signs of aging and we put a catch net in his outside sun cage a few months ago and we have had to lower his inside free range to just a couple feet tall instead of 6 feet high. It's still tall enough that he can see out the window and he likes that. He had MBD when he was young, before my daughter got him and the vet believes this is causing his falling problems.

These photos were made outside on Sunday evening. Hendershot is enjoying his Hibiscus tree and then one of him on the photo stick.

What a beautiful boy Jann!! He's so sweet! I can only hope that Muffins turns out as handsome as Hendershot. Love these pics! <3

Jann what a beautiful Nosy Be he is! I'm glad to hear he is still able to get around and enjoy life at 4.5 years old despite issues from his younger days.

I always enjoy reading your post and seeing what you have to say. However, I don't know much if any of your past and your start in the chameleon world. Do you have a blog or past threads that shed any light on your story?

What a beauty! 4.5 years? he carries them well :)

Thank you for the nice compliment. Hendershot is still my handsome boy but his colors have faded allot. The red around his eyes use to be a very vibrant red.

Thank you Lauren. I'm sure Muffin will be a very handsome man in your care.

He is beautiful as always! I am going to get a blue chameleon one of these days!

Thank you for the very kind words Carol.

Thank you Nick. I did a copy paste below from an older thread (a few years back) and I'll add that in 2010 my daughter decided she wanted to stop keeping and sold as many of her chams as she could. She had been breeding for a few years. The ones she couldn't sale or didn't want to sale she left with me. It was almost like taking in a bunch of rescues. Most were either old, special needs or had health problems.

I laid eyes on my first chameleon in the summer of 2004 when my daughter came home from college for the summer with one. At first I thought what does she want with that thing????? Then I quickly fell in love with it. By the next summer she came home with several and the summer after so many they wouldn’t all fit in the house. My daughter has always traveled a lot with her boyfriend of 7 years so I was always the cham-sitter. She’s had mostly panthers and Melleri. She also has a Bearded, a Leopard Gecko and a Chinchilla.

Unfortunately, I have had to help her deal with death, euthanasia and many surgeries and all types of sickness. She bred panthers for a while but stopped when she moved to GA for grad school so I’ve also had to pet sit panther babies…….which by the way are much smaller than veileds……kind of like my little Elly. Her chameleons have had tongue problems, eye problems along with the amputation of an eye ball (Jr. does fantastic with one eye). Some of her chams have had coccidia and all other types of parasites including the worms under the skin that have to be cut out. I’ve seen MBD, RI, prolapse, gout, bloody stools, missing toes, nipped tails and various infections just to name a few. Right now her WC 7 to 8 year old panther Vega has been paralyzed from the waist down for months. He’s also had mouth rot and surgery to fill in a hole in the roof of his mouth.

I didn’t get my very own chameleon until 2007 when my husband surprised me with Luie. Other than Luie having a brown spot on his mouth when he was young and having coccidia twice, my animals have been fairly healthy. I got Camille in 2008 and Camille has laid several clutches of eggs….two fertile and I’ve raised a clutch of 27 babies and now my little preemie Elly. Elly’s little eyes are very sensitive to the UVB bulb and I have to take her outside a lot for natural UV and have spent countless hours moving her all over the back yard to keep her temperature at 80.

I also have a Cuban Knight Anole than lays infertile eggs about every three weeks from spring to fall. She has also been very healthy.

Jann, thanks for taking the time to respond! That is an awesome story on how it started with you daughter and then shifted to you becoming such a huge influence and leader in the chameleon world.

Your second paragraph scared me. While I was reading it I had to stop and go check on all my little ones to make sure everything was ok with them lol. I've couldn't imagine the amount of stress it must put on you when you have to deal with all those different injuries/health issues.

Does your daughter plan on getting back into Chameleons in the future as I assume she received her graduate degree?

He is just so handsome. Like carol, I too want a blue boy in the future. Your chameleons are always so happy and beautiful.

Jann, Hendershot looks great! Congratulations on 4 1/2 years! Of all your chams, I've always had a soft spot for Hendershot - I fell in love with Nosy Bes first, so they will always have a special place in my heart.

You are welcome Nick and that's an old post. I've been through allot more since then. It is very stressful and heartbreaking. I don't think my daughter will ever get back into chameleons. She has two cats now but sometimes she pet sits for me. ;) She did graduate and she's a Speech Language Pathologist.

Thank you Rachelle for your kind words about Hendershot and all my chams. I try really hard to make them happy.
