okay my bf bought me a chameleon yesterday. We got it from a local pet store and they told us that a glass tank was good for them now i am reading they are not i immediately contacted them adn they have ordered me a screen cage. I have a lot of questions i am trying to figure out the best things to do for my little guy...can anyone please help...i am very new. I have had other lizards like iguannas and bearded dragons but i know that Chameleons are very different. what should i use in the bottom of the cage if anything?? any plants they like better? Lighting i have one for day do i need one for night if not what do i use for heat? Please dont bash me for not knowing anything before i got him i realize i probably should have done reaserch first but it was a gift and i have spent my whole day researching while i should be working:D thanks fo all teh help in advance

Check out fl chams website for care, cage setup , lighting, supplements, the info is very useful. Im sure other sellers have info as well, look at the site sponsers and check their websites

well, other then what chameleon you have i am going to assume its the most commonly sold chameleon in pet stores, a vieled.

yes you need a basking lamp, and a UV lamp, that need to be on for at least about 10-12 hours a day.

plants there is a list of what plants are safe in a section of the forums below this, something that is branchy/viney.

water should be misted with a spray bottle 3/4 times a day or you can go easy but expensive and set upa a mist system.

substrate is bad leave it clean and plain in the bottom.

temperatures depend on the chameleon.

yes its a vieled. i found a list of plants and i am going out to buy a few tonight! I will take out the substrate now!!! why do people who work at stores where they sell them tell you all the wrong things!!!! i swear we were there for at least 2 hours!!!

Thank you guys for all of your help!!! I have read a bunch of places that you shouldnt handle them too much but then a see people with pics of them handling them...what is right?

i am part of another forum for dogs and i am just wondering why i need to keep my threads to a minimum?

Don't worry about asking questions. You are not limited in threads. There is a search function associated with the forum which puts you in touch with the questions asked before you, but I find that http://raisingkittytheveiledchameleon.blogspot.com/ is the best place to go for any questions.

One thing I want to say is be sure to get the tube type UVB bulb. The twisted ones are not good. I made that mistake when I was starting out and I burned 2 of my babies. 8 months later they have finally shed the damaged skin off. I am so thankful they didn't die or become blind.

Most folks here will offer advice if asked and if someone else hasn't covered the question already in your thread.

Good luck with your baby and be sure to post pictures. I have 4 veilds and just mated one over the weekend. This will be a first for me.

I fully agree with Boca Jan. Ask questions and please read Raising Kitty. This site helped me so much when I got my chameleon. Jann

okay i checked out that site and also read the sticky above on general care...i am now trying to look for a calcium suplement does anyone of a perferred brand??? also what other vitamins shouls i be supplementing?

ill recommend, as i was recommended, the rep-cal with and without d/3, and use the rep-cal herptivite multi vitamines.

okay i went out and bought some plants last night the repisun 5.0 the calcium and vitamin supplements but she doesn’t seem to want to eat...maybe she just doesn’t want an audience

Make sure you wash the plants...most of them have pesticides and if it does and the chameleons licks water off of those leaves with pesticide it will be dead in a week.

i read some where to wash them with a little antibactierial soap and they should be good so thats what i did!! thanks for all the help guys!!! i have read that she may not be eating because shes getting used to the new enviroment...is this true??? she drinks A LOT...
