Hello chameleon enthusiasts.
I just wanted to introduce myself to you all and explain what has brought me here.

I am from Australia and I'm currently studying a zoo keeping course. My major assignment for the course is to create a husbandry manual for a species of my choice and I have chosen C. Calyptratus (Veiled chameleon).

In Australia, it is legal only to keep native reptile species as a private keeper and so unfortunately I am unable to keep chameleons myself (I currently keep a jungle carpet python Morelia spilota cheynei, a brown tree snake Boiga irregularis and 3 dwarf bearded dragons Pogona henrylawsoni).
I do however volunteer at a reptile park that holds this species so I am able to work with them a little.

I'm hoping that in becoming a member of this forum I may be able to gain a lot of knowledge about the species from all you experienced and enthusiastic chameleon keepers.

I would like my husbandry manual to be as complete as possible so when I ask questions I would like to hear lots of opinions from different people. There, of course, is no single way to care for any animal, so I would like to hear everyone's opinions based on their own experiences.

I look forward to chatting to you all and learning as much as possible about these incredible creatures.

Welcome to the forums. This is a great place to learn about chameleons. What a shame that you can't keep them there. I absolutely love my veileds! They are awesome chameleons. I have a little blog you might like to read and I'm attached the forums care sheet and more info on chameleons in general.

There is so much to be learned and you can tell that the one thing that even the most argumentative keepers share is there love for these reptiles-

The care sheets here are fantastic - they don't go into more than the basic what and why as there are a lot of younger members and new keepers and being one myself (not young but a new keeper) they try and keep it simple enough for a new member to follow - and I think they have - Following them has worked for me so far so I hope they don't change a thing. I also have always like to know the why's .. which is why I like a heated thread once in a while - there's quite a bit to learn when two or three long time keepers disagree -

Thanks for the replies guys, and also for those links. Some useful information there, particularly the thread about watering. This was something I wanted to get people's opinions on and was one of the first questions I was going to ask but you beat me to it, thanks kplatvoet.

I'm going to enjoy searching through the forums for lots of juicy information. I think it's going to take me some time though, this place looks massive.
I apologise in advance if I start asking questions that have been asked to death previously. I am a real beginner with chameleons and am unable to get much first hand experience working with them as I am only at the reptile park one day a week. And being a volunteer I have to just follow the methods they employ there and can't change things around to try different techniques.

So I ask for your patience and your positive contributions.
And hopefully at the end of my course I will be able to produce a high quality husbandry manual with well rounded opinions.
Ideally it would be a document that new as well as experienced keepers ccould refer to for optimal care practices of this species. At least that is my aim...
