Just curious what people grow for themselves-- I currently have:

Dubias, Dusky Cave Roaches, Pallid Roaches, Green banana roaches...

temped to breed supers, crickets, and hornworms...

what do you do? Pictures of colonies are always welcome :)

Crickets
Hornworms
Starting on SIlkworms
Mantids

Ill post my hornworms in a bit. but pretty much thy are in a chammie baby cage. inside a tub of dirt. with a small scheffelara in the cage as well

i have 7 worms who have pupated, and 3 more that just buried themselves yesterday.

i plan to grow a small tomato plant and stick it near the cage (not in since if they eat it its toxic) but they need the plant smell to lay eggs.

I breed cricket, dubia, red runners, silkworms, hornworms when I have extra,Florida giant katydids, green bird grasshoppers when in season, ff flies, stick bugs and soon giant jungle nymphs.:D:cool:

I am doing superworms, green banana roaches, Discoid roaches, Dusky Cave roaches, Surinamensis roaches, and mantids.

I may try crickets next, but I'm pretty content just having worms and roaches on hand all the time. Saves me a lot of money ordering things in.

:D long list!

Dusky cave roaches, discoid roaches, Suriname roaches, european mantids, chinese mantids, pallid roaches, B. lateralis roaches, E. distanti roaches, dubia roaches, hornworms, silkworms, cabbage white butterflies, buckeye butterflies, west coast lady butterflies, buffalo worms, mealworms, and probably a few I'm missing.

I enjoy insects.

DEFINITELY post your hornworm set-up. I am super interested in breeding these. :D

Thanks!!!!! Tell me though, are hatchling hornworms too large for a baby panther?

not at all.
when they first first hatc from the egg.. they are the size of sugar ants.

as they grow, and they do grow fast, you can feed them off.

they go from ant size, to 3-4 inches long.
you just feed them off as they get to the size he needs. and others that have gotten too big, you simply can learn to breed.

basically, my set up is simple.

a baby cham cage.
a small bin, the size of a shoe box (but plastic) filled with loose dirt, i put the huge wormms in it, and they eventually buried themselves, and pupated.
in a few weeks, they will emerge as moths.
they drink sugar water. (like for hummingbirds)

once a moth, they need a tomato plant near by (not in cage with them) to stimulate mating and egg laying. once eggs are laid, you can leave them in, or remove and place in another bin to hatch. and start all over.

they eat siklworm chow.

where do you guys find the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????? lol

also im interested in caring for green banana roaches, giant or normals, anyone got any tips to care for these guys? like setup/substrate and your experiences with them

they look cool and may try it out as one of many feeders im planning to breed

like dubias, silkworms, crickets, mantids, superworms, etc.

i might get lazy on hornworms and silks most likely:rolleyes:
