Eye Help please!

Miss Lily

Does anyone have any idea what's going on with Amy's eyes? The last few days she has been closing them a bit in the day, but what concerns me most is the bubble like swellings in front of her eyes. The right one is worse than the left and it only seems to happen when she's just sitting there (which is most of the time). They don't bulge out when she is out of her cage.

My other problem is that my reptile vet is on holiday this week, and although I have been told any one of the other vets could take a look at her, I need to go in armed with as much information as I can this time! I don't trust vets as it is after what happened with Lily. Now I just feel helpless and don't know how to help her.:( She was treated for pneumonia a few weeks back and she had two shots of Baytril. Now I am wondering if she has a problem with her kidneys causing water retention. She is drinking whenever I offer water and her urates, although still white were quite hard a couple of days ago.

Here's the pics of her eyes.

That's a bummer Tiff! It might be an infection.. Is her mouth ok? the 2 things can be related.
Try to flush the eye with saline solution and see how it goes.
All the best

Thanks, she has been like that since she shed her right eye last week. The left one is yet to shed and she did get a bit stuck in there but I misted her straight away and though it was ok again. I know vets need holidays, but I really don't need him to be on holiday this week! He was the vet that told me Lily shouldn't have been given a certain drug by my previous vet, so I have more faith in him than anyone else. Poor Amy, I luffs her so much! :(

Her mouth seems ok to me, and she has been eating and drinking without any trouble. I was reading on here about the Nasolacrimal duct between the eyes and nose getting blocked, and wondered if that is her problem. I just wish I knew more. Now, without my reptile vet I feel like I have to go there and tell them what I think is wrong and what should be done. I don't just want her pumped with another dose of Baytril, as that seems to be the first thing any vet tries.

Yep, I was going to suggest nasolacrimal ducts blocked. I have a paper describing how to flush those if you want to share it with your vet (can't be done at home). I wonder why both of them would be blocked though...

oh sorry u are having issues tiff, have you tried a nice shower for her, as well as you could try some polysporin eye drops.
keep us posted
best wishes for a safe speedy recovery to Amy

i would like to read this paper, just for referance:)

ferretinmyshoes - I would be very interested in reading that paper. I need al the help I can get. I have been giving her face a lot of extra misting and she does the eye cleaning thing, but it doesn't seem to help. Hoj - are those eye drops prescription only or could I buy them (or similar) in the chemist? Perhaps I will try that and the mistings and showers and maybe take her to the vet later this week.

Hi Tiff,
So sorry to here about Amy, looks like fluid to me i think if they have a chest infection this can cause fluid build up affecting the eyes but think this also affects the sinuses too. Is there no other experienced reptile vets that you know that might perhaps let you email over a pic to them to see what they think ive done this myself in the past when ive havnt been able to see my usual vet.
So hope everything is ok soon, thinking of you Heatherxxx

I see a bit of shed left on the head..Did she recently shed and did this present itself during or even after the shedding process?

Out of curiosity, are you using preformed vit a in her supplementation or only beta carotene?
I use this http://zoomed.com/db/products/EntryDetail.php?SearchID=5&DatabaseID=2&EntryID=3 - I alternate the weekend feed between the 'with D3' and 'without D3' versions, and plain calcium through the week. I don't use compact UV either so I know it's not the lighting causing this.

I wouldn't know who else to ask Heather, as my last reptile vet I don't have faith in any more, hence seeing this new chap who is really good. I want to keep seeing the same one as he knows her history. She has never been seen by a different vet practice.

Yes, she shed her right eye last Wednesday and got a bit stuck on her eye, but I misted lots and it all seemed ok. Her left eye is yet to shed and isn't so bad as the right one. Poor baby, it must feel awful for her.

I have not heard of this occurring. By chest infection do you mean in the chest cavity like pyothorax, or in the lungs? Non-respiratory chest infections are very unusual in reptiles.

Just my two cents. If you have a vet in your area that can deal with this. I would take the chameleon in for them to see if there is indeed stuck shed in the eye. Maybe the other eye did shed and you missed it? Its what it looks like to me and those obstructions look huge.

Check out the link below. Scroll down a bit and you will see a semi similar case.

Thanks for that link. She hasn't shed the left eye yet - it still looks 'frosty' like it needs to. The 'Eyeball Maintenance' video that you have linked to is mine that I took of her cleaning her eyes ages ago. I am happy for it to be used wherever it is needed!

I don't have any solutions for you, but can offer warm wishes from this side of the pond for some quick answers and an easy recovery for the little dear! Keep us posted!

Hey tiff unless you buy online polysporin is impossible to buy over the counter over here, I needed some last year and tried everywhere including boots the staff never even heard of it but if you can get your hands on it its meant to be good.
