alot of people use cat food.
This is an easy way to build your colony. How ever it is suggested that you remove the ones you are going to feed off and gutload them with vegetables.

Some kind of staple protein (Like dog food). And then fruits or veggies every other day.
I do also use roach buffet from http://www.thecarnivorousorchid.com/...=3&prevstart=0 as a gutload.... I also keep water crystals for constant hydration. They drink a lot....

do not use cat food or dog food when you are about to feed the roaches to your chameleon.
the cat and dog food are good for your roaches to survive, but it can cause your chameleon gout. I guess you can separate the dubia that you are about to fed to your chameleon, and gutload them with vegetables, or dry food e.g: roachfood from cricketfood.com for a good 48 hours so they can flush out all that dog and catfood from their system (just in case) I personally don't use the high protein gutload at all.. |

I agree with booshifted
But I also make my own chow from SFHC bulk ingredients and give them a rotating range of fruits they reproduce well and there's no chance of a chinese melamine contamination from pet foods. That way when dusted they're maxed out - inside their tissues, gut and shell.

I started my colony about 2 months ago. I did use a type of cricket food you are referring to just to finish it off. (Mine was green and was called Total Bites.) There is no need to buy special to feed the roaches. Much easier and cheaper to use veggies and fruit. I separate out the roaches I use as feeders and gutload them with a premix I get from blapticadubia.com. They seem to like it but there are a lot of alternatives. Personally I do not use the water crystals for the colony because I feed veggies and fruit. I do use them in my feeder container because the gutload is a dry mix. Whether this is a good way or the best way to keep them . . . who knows . . . All I know is after 2 months I just pulled out 50+ baby dubias about the size of the end of a pencil eraser. I started out with 10 pairs of adults and the rest a mix (total of 50), then I added a few dozen from the local pet store. I used some of the pet store ones as feeders and let everything else mature out for the colony. Hope this helps Jim

They'll need a protein source of some kind. It will take a while to build your colony up so you may want to put a dish of dogfood in there at least and leave them alone for a while. If they do not get enough protein, they start eating each others body parts :P
