Does your wood cage warp?

I was recently looking at a thread about a beautiful wood cage. I would love to build one but am afraid that with the high humidity and water exposure it would be warped at best and destroyed at worst in a short amount of time.

How do you stop that from happening? Wouldn't a paint job just protect the exposed area? what about the joints and seams?

Thanks,
Kevin

Fill your joints with wood filler...prime EVERYwhere...and paint with exterior hi-gloss enamel. It'll be fine.

Or use treated lumber.

I prefer a good paint job.

Have you tried latex? Alot of the threads I've read say latex may be the safest.

I want to make it a fairly decorative cage so that makes the treated lumber more difficult to work with.

Thanks for the tips,
Kevin

I just finished making another wooden cage, I stain all my cages and then add 2-4 coats of polyurethane, and silicone all the joints and around all the floors, for water that may sit for any amount of time... you do that and you should be fine... I am going to build a multi cage for outside use this summer and it will be made of treated lumber but i feel i will also use poly on it as well because i don't like to think of my animals possibly chewing on the wood possibly, there are a lot of nasty chemicals in the treated lumber...

I really like the design of this one.

I already have a cabinet base that I built for a terrarium. I'd like to make an insert for the floor like this one that I found in another thread.

I also like the design of the 3 piece enclosure. Floor(with built in drain), removable screen enclosure area, removable top.

I plan on making it to drop into my existing cabinet.

I just want to make sure that it will last.

The link to his whole thread is here.
