Dissection results...GRAPHIC pictures

Joey died last night at 2100. I did my own dissection to harvest the eggs that were not there. Here is what I think happened, posted after the pictures of what I saw when I opened him up.

What I think may have happened is, he received a dose of anti-parasitic at some point on his journey. It was probably a large dose, since I don't believe they weigh and dose accurately. That would kill the majority of the adult parasites, which the body has to pass. If he had a large load, that is a lot of worms to pass. I think they got jammed up in several sections of the bowel. The second thing is that when the majority of the parasites are killed at once, the body reacts with a huge immune response causing inflammation of the bowel which now traps the balled up dead parasites in the bowel and makes them difficult if not impossible to pass. Temporary blockages in the bowel are called and ileus and can usually be treated before it becomes a complete obstruction. I saw what I believe were two of these. There was also one very large obstruction, filled with gas and necrotic. When I opened that section of bowel, I almost died from the smell. This is untreatable except by surgery to remove the dead portion of bowel, which in my opinion, he wouldn't have survived. The bowel is wrapped up on itself in the abdomen, and having several areas that are expanded/bloated, would look like eggs on an x ray. So as this section of bowel started rotting, explains the weird behavior and why he stopped eating. Unfortunately, these were also symptoms of a gravid female.

Oh geeze, all that tissue is completely necrotic! That poor thing, I can't believe what he must have felt with all of that going on. What a shame...

Franie, you and Joey have just taught all the forum members a very valuable lesson so he didn't die in vein. I am so sorry for your loss and I know Joey had the best with you during his final days.

What a bummer:( This is one reason I tell suppliers of WC animals not to treat them with anything before they send something to me. Sorry about your loss.

I am so sorry you lost him. Poor guy must have been so uncomfortable with all that going on inside him. Thank you so much for being strong enough to share that info and those pics. You could never have known what was happening, especially as you though he was a she. It must be even harder to diagnose anything with Melleri, where both sexes look the same.

Hey Franie, I'm glad you posted these - it will help everyone in future situations.

Just remember you did everything you could!

This is the first time ive seen a disection of a cham :(

I can totally tell that its not right in there..

sorry for the loss

So sorry for your loss Franie (as you already know). You did all you could.
I'm glad you posted the pictures of the autopsy though.
The more we learn about why a chameleon dies, the better it should be for other ones.

Thanks everyone. I absolutely agree with posting this if not for just the educational benefit alone. I'm glad if I was able to help someone, or some cham. I know I learned a lot just from a keepers stand point,

Wow Franie - I am so sorry for your loss! That is so tragic! I would so hate to see one of our chams to have gone through that! :(
Thanks for the lesson.
