Custom Cages?

Id love to see some photos of your custom cages! I am thinking about building one because I like the wood look better than the aluminum. If there is any drawbacks from using a custom enclosure over an aluminum one, Id love to know what they are.

Also, does anyone have any plans or links to directions on the basics of building one? Id appreciate any information you can give on the subject.

Thanks!

The main draw back, in my lazy opinion, is biulding it. :) You also have to seal the wood and what not to make sure the wood doesn't rot from all the water you'll be spraying onto it. Also, they dont come with a PVC bottom so you gotta make your own.

There are lots of threads about diy wood cages, Use the search button. There are also members on here that make cages and sell them.

Well, I have a good while before any chameleon I will get has to have a large custom cage, so thats not a problem (I have a medium aluminum cage for when babies/or juvies). Neither is sealing or refinishing the wood. I do that quite often with the household furniture.

Thanks!

I did. Thanks. That cage looks built like a master. I also have one more question. If I were to build a cage for one adult male panther chameleon, would 36"x18"x48" LWH or 24"x24"x48" be 'better'? I know bigger is always better when it comes to enclosures, but would the extra length compensate for the loss in width? I was also thinking about 48" (or 60")x18"x48" LWH with a divider for a pair or two males of different locales. (Should the divider would be opaque if I do this?)

Thanks.

I built mine that big 48"Lx36Wx42"H because I am going to buy my fiance a ambilobe panther for Christmas. So I am going to divide it into two seperate cages. But for now Jasper is enjoying his huge casa:p

That thing is a masterpiece! It didnt look that big! Thats amazing. I wish I had the room for something like that. If I were to build that big, he might as well have the whole room as free range! I love it!

Thanks! The funny thing is that the cage was going to be in a room. By the time I decided I should messure the doorway it was too late. So I moved everything out of my huge hallway closet and thats his new room. When he gets bigger I thought about losing the cage and just using the closet as a free rage :D

I agree! And thats where the 18" comes from in my design, to make sure that it will fit through the door without struggle. :)

I groove my screen into the wood(except my sun cages).....anything bigger then 24inches requires more support since the screen can start sagging. the cage I attached is 24x24x60 and was built for melleri.

I use super screen now, and its very strong(dog proof) and wont cause nose sores if the Cham rubs against it.
