Today was sunbathing day for my cham. I took him outside for him to climb on a his favorite tree when i notice half of his tail was all black with some shed around it. Could this be a part of the shed or could he have burnt his tail. I never leave him unattended while his basking light is on. He has sheded one time but i miss it. So this is my first time experiencing his shed =) . ThankssHappy 4th of Juy to everyone!

What do you mean by "I never leave him unattended while his basking light is on"? The basking light should be on all day (12-13 hours) and shouldn't require any type of supervision at all, if it does you probably have the light way to close to where he sits to bask, either that, or im very confused.

Trying to understand your question the heat lamp is the fixture light i have sitting on top of his cage and his basking light is on the side of the cage clamp on to support the basking light. I have a graceful chameleon. His basking light is on all day when i take him out to sunbathe thats when its off.( so i don't waste electricity) My chameleon is always with me in my room but he is in his cage. The only way he is out of his cage when he on his tree and i'm cleaning his cage outside.

Can you take a more detailed picture of his tail?

Can you take one of your lighting setup and/or enclosure?

What kind of thermometer are you using to take the temperature?

Where in the cage is it placed?

Sorry i may have confused you a bit. If you could provide a picture of the enclosure with clear pictures of the lighting setup, and a picture of where he specifically basks that would be excellent.

I think my wording was a poor choice so ill clear myself up.

There should be 2 lights. One for heat, and one for UVB rays. They should be separate from each other. Basking light and heat lamp/light are all the same thing, basically the light that ISN'T the UVB light, sorry if i mixed you up there.

my only concern is that the light you are using for heat, may be 1 of 2 things or both.

1. Too close to where he sits to bask
2. Too high of a power wattage for his enclosure

or Both.

If the light is a little too close, he might have been climbing on the top screen of the enclosure and got his tail too close to the light, especially if it is literally sitting on your top screen lid.

So just post up a picture of the enclosure and lights, and I could get a better understanding of the situation.

Kianna, for most of us here, your heatlight IS your basking light, only one heat source is required.
"basking spot' refers to a branch/perch/vine etc, directly beneath the heat source (this needs to be at the right distance (down) from the heat source, so that the temperature,
taken at the 'basking spot' is ideal for your species.
About the tail, on occasion, color change occurs according to mood/temp etc, even in places like the tail. Ive seen my chameleons tail go dark before today and have me double checking everything, imaginiong the worst, but later will be its normal green.
If your heat source is ontop and the basking spot at suitable distance, then a burn only on the tail is unlikely. It may be something to do with shedding you mention.

Do you mean that your heat source is attached via a clamp on the side of the cage, but shining from above?

I just got done cleaning his cage and here is how his basking light looks like with the light on and him in the cage. I do have a tube uvb light but haven't put it on so i can show you how it looks with the basking light. sorry
