Chameleon Greenhouse Good Ideal or Bad

I made a post a couple of days ago about Inlaws Hates Reptiles. Well after thinking about the floor plans and landscape of the property. After thinking about it, I was thinking about having either a screened off room leading off the master bedroom. Or a separate building off to the side of the house. If I do it leading off the masters bedroom I would have to find a contractorto put in a door leading outside. What does everyone think?

Sounds expensive!!

All that for only 2 chams?
You must really love them :)

Do they get along free range together?

Are you thinking of just turning them loose in there?

Nah... lol I'm going to have a pair of ambilobe, a breeding pair of veileds, and ambanja pair... maybe a Jackson's pair. All would have individual enclosures of 2ftx3ftx6ft

I say have an enclosure built for the Inlaws!!! You could even look for a pre-built one a few miles away. I've seen quite a few out there, you just need one that suits their basic needs. There are even people out there that can help you find the perfect Inlaw enclosure... I think they were called Realtors or something like that. :D:rolleyes:

If you do something separate from the house, make sure it can hold up to whatever weather and animals you may have in the area! You don't need a hail storm or a snake destroying what you put all your effort into! Also, you'll need separate electric and maybe water run to it depending on the scale of the project.

Good luck! :)

Oh my, I'm not up to date here. The last I read, you were renting and moving into a travel trailer. No? Well, if you're renting, you need landlord permission to do anything. As for guests, I'm not revising my way of life for a visitors. I do have a spare room devoted to chams, so I can shut the door, but that's it. If guests don't like it, they can stay elsewhere, and take me out to dinner. :)

My husbands parents want us to take over their house. So we might be moving in later next year. I'm just thinking about the possibilities

I'm looking into one as well. I'm looking at a 20' x 48' with four season climate control. Not including building permits and site excavation I'm in the ball park of 20k but figuring closer to 25k.

Anyone interested in buying my 2012 Camaro SS so I can pay for it. Lol!

I think it depends on your climate. In southern California, or southern Florida it would be relatively easy, in Montana not such a good idea.

I think for most of the US a year round outdoor enclosure is nearly impossible without excellent climate control. That is the main trick. I have been trying to work out a design that is more like an insulated shed with a Solacryl skylight, green house vent louvers, a radiator heater, and a small ac unit on a programmable thermostat. Even doing it all myself and keeping it small enough to not need a permit it will still cost at least 4k.

If you can control year round temps go for it!

For the most part a greenhouse can be kept in any state in the USA. However the problem happens when you want to put your greenhouse in a more extreme climate such as Anchorage Alaska or Phoenix Arizona. Greenhouses can be done in these extreme conditions however they are extremely expensive and difficult to maintain.

A good example is when I went to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia they had huge greenhouses that had to be kept under 80 Fahrenheit to grow ornamental flowers when outside temperature were well over 110 Fahrenheit. The electrical bills had to have been huge.

Search greenhouse in YouTube for some ideas. You can build one out of PVC and plastic sheeting. Controlling the temps will depend on your size.

All jokes aside I'm interested in a camero. I have a room I am going to dedicate to chams. So a free range mixed species situation is a no go?

It always been my dream to have a greenhouse. Could probably keep other animals to. Turtles, maybe some gekos to. Not sure how to insure they get enough uvb though.

The uvb is a concern of mine too especially in the winter months. My plan for winter is to run a single HO T5 5.0 over each cage. Since the winter light cycle is shorter I would also run some over head lighting. In the summer month's I should be able to get by with shade cloth over the chameleon portion. My greenhouse will be split between the chameleons and orchids.

I haven't been in the Cham hobby to long(around a year). But as with my other animals what they need don't have to be as strict as other hobbyist make it. If your Cham get a of sunlight doing the summer; winter time as long as they get good supplements and some UVB they will be fine.I am about to run into a lil but of spending money and in the process of making a mixed Cham room. I originally wanted to do a bunch of Jackson's but love panthers. Knowing that they would not fair well with different Cham species(I keep trying to figure that out). I have been looking into alternatives. So far I am thinking a male female Cham trio, an iguana, tortoise on the ground. Maybe some adult chauhou geckos.....
As for plants orchids would be beautiful that was a great idea I Always tried to put them in tanks but they grow to tall. Another idea would be broms too.

I've been in the hobby give or take 15 years. Even with housing my animals outside in the summer being in the northeast we have kinda long winters. UV bulbs are defineatly needed for the 9 months they are inside.
