Chameleon Cantina

I've had one for a month or so and been testing it.

I've even caught one of my Quads using it.

Overall I like it. However yesterday I was checking temps in various areas of the reptile room and zapped (I use a cooper temp gun) my cantina. I was surprised to see the water temp was 87F.

Turns out that with such a small amount of water the little pump is warming it up. I'm not too sure if my chams will enjoy drinking 87F water. I found that by dropping an ice cube in it the temps drop for a good portion of the day.

Thoughts?

Do you belong to Chameleon Central on Facebook? I do and I know there are quite a few members that are using them successfully. I never heard anyone complaining about the water temp though. This might be a stupid question, but is it near your basking light? Could the light be heating up the water at all?

I have three of them. I've not noticed them gettin warm but I just check the temps of the water of one that's pretty close to the basking spot and it said 78. My guys like their water warm but I know hot water will grow bacteria faster. I have yet to see one of my guys drink from the cantinas but have seen them all in front of it interested.

You're talking about the small plastic product that was introduced around ~$25 a few months ago yeah?

I've been using one for about a month now and I love it. I have seen my cham drinking out of it several times so I know he likes to use it.

Like you mentioned, the water does get warm. Although I am not sure whether its the pump or the basking light. I keep my Cantina mounted up high so it could very well be the basking light.

I just got mine in the mail today. How much water do you fill it up with? I was surprised that the directions didn'the mention anything about that.

Also, I've seen an example of one that someone set up and they placed the grid on top of the carbon filter instead of underneath as the picture on the box shows. Which way is correct? Or does it really matter?

Yeah mine is not anywhere near a basking light, seriously the cage is 7' tall and the lights are 3' away from it. Also when I check the surface temps of items nearby, like just 6" away, the temps are much lower than the Cantina.

It must be the pump. I wonder if I got a bum pump...

Has anybody ever used the 1 drop of bleach method for cleaning and sterilizing the water and parts? I may have just dated myself.....

I'm pretty positive if you leave it on for for hours or more the water temp starts to heat but will drop back down after being turned off and turned back on again later

Using 1 drop of bleach? No I have never tried it, but if you do, let me know what you think. I have still never seen mine drink from it.

A 10% hypochlorite (bleach) solution is often the standard for disinfection in zoos, even with amphibian bowls. Just allow whatever you are cleaning to completely dry out for 24 hours. The hypochlorite will completely off-gas in that time leaving what you've cleaned sterilized and safe to use. :)
