can you refrigerate crickets?

i know that you can refrigerate meal worms. I have always ordered a bulk pack of crickets and they have never lasted more then a month without them all dieing. can they be refrigerated like mealworms?

You can. If you want to kill em all. Good idea, but they need heat.

No, they will die in prolonged cold. You can put them for just a little while (not hours) to slow them down if they're jumping like crazy when you mess with them, but that's about it.

Lol! I put a tub of crix in the fridge the other evening to slow them down so I could remove their back legs. Only thing was I forgot they were in there until the next morning! Most of them survived although it took a while for them to recover and start moving. They were in there at least 12 hours - keeping them in the fridge permanently wouldn't work!

a refrigerator will kill the crickets... i have 4 chams right now and buy my crickets by the 1,000's... what i do to keep them.. is I use a plastic 10-20 gal tub ..any tub will work.. cut a hole into lid.. and glue a peice of screen to it.. gives them plenty of air flow... air flow is critical. always gut load your crickets.. high protein and vitamins... i use pultry feed.. and flukers cricket gutload mixed.. you can wet it to give the crickets moistness.. they need to eat and drink a healthy diet.. its critical your chams or other reptile eat healthy crickets,... hope this helps.. good luck..

Personally I stay away from poultry food because it tends to be high in protein to maximize growth in birds but can cause gout and other metabolic problems in reptiles. Also they add all kinds of preservatives, antifungals, and hormone additives to poultry food because the goal is totally different than reptile hobbies. There's no concrete evidence yet to say additives are technically detrimental (although high protein levels are definitely bad) but studies are scarce on a lot of reptile issues. I avoid it. Just my opinion fwiw...

yeah i was unsure of the pultry was trying it mostly because it came highly recomended.. im not really partial of it.. i prefer my flukers and cricket crack.. usually only ue the feed when im low on gut load.... even then its mixed with others.. thanks for the info.. ill stray away from the pultry..

Wow! I thought I was the only one cutting off their hind legs! But I do not freeze them for that, I just grab, cut and feed!

I've left mine outside in 40 degree weather for two or so days. Die off was minimal. If you keep the crickets cool (less than 70 F) then they last much longer. Clean the bin to pick out the dead ones and feed/water them. They grow slower that way. If you can get them into the 50s they start to really slow down. I've had some 1/8" crickets for two, going on three, weeks and they haven't grown at all at 65 day time, 55 night time. Maybe a wine cooler is in need?
