Your not serious????? It was just a couple days ago that you were on here in a panic because you had just realized that you had run out of food for your chams. Now correct me if I am wrong, but from some of your other posts, you also have quite a few other reptiles and you are looking to obtain more reptiles in the near future. Also, from a previous post of yours, you are looking to sell your turtles to be able to have funding to feed your chams. Now, this is just my opinion, you need to
A. figure out how to properly care for the chams that you already have. You have no idea how to feed, raise, or breed any feeders. 300 dubia are not going to breed enough to feed 40+ tiny mouths even if you let them alone for the next 6 months to breed. Breeding silks, and crickets takes a lot of time and space, not to mention it is expensive to do.
B. Your chams should be AT LEAST 18 month old to even think about breeding. They are still growing until almost 2 years of age. Your female needs to be very healthy with sufficient stores to be able to produce a healthy clutch and to remain healthy herself. There are many potential complications with females and infertile clutches alone. You need to do tons of research and talk to a lot of experienced keepers of female chams, before thinking about breeding.
C. Do you have any idea how many babies you will have????? It is extremely expensive to breed and raise babies. The food alone will bankrupt you. You need lots of bins, uv lighting, supplements, vet visits for all of them with fecals, etc for 40+ babies and more housing as they get bigger. Then, finding homes for them all. It is a full time job just incubating the eggs correctly. What happens when you are back in school???

Take the time to raise your current chams healthy and enjoy the experience. Get more comfortable with this first before thinking about anything else.

You need to get all your husbandry corrrect before even considering being a chameleon breeder. You were freaking out over having run out of feeders. How are you going to handle 25-30 baby veileds that have to be fed about 250-300 pin head crix a day or fruit flies. You should concentrate on getting and keeping your chams you have in tip top condition first and foremost.

You havwe a min of 6 months before your female is old enough to be bred. If you are serious about this project then YOU need to start researching this topic and reading all you can on proper incubation and egg laying etc... Do you have any idea how much $$$ it costs to produce just one clutch of chams? If your not raising your own feeders it will bankrupt you in less than a month. And with the cost of veileds being what they are you arent going to recoup most of those costs. Just the way it is.

I agree

I have to agree with the other posters, it does not sound like you are ready to handle breeding chams. This is a significant undertaking like any animal breeding project. If not done optimally you risk not just $$$, but the health and well being of your chams and their offspring.

Please wait until you have the resources and experience to take this on. For now I would say this is something best left to the pros.

thats a bit weird but im 15 ik my basic husbandry yes i need to touch up on my skills but who doesn't have a bad day? yes i was wondering what i needed to do to breed my animals not to be strangled by rude remarks. i have already found a BETTER home for them.

i dont think i needed to be brought into this and yeah my babies started hatching 5 weeks before i go back to school. Im still on vacation. Hope you keep your chams. You are turning out to really show you care for your chams

He also has been keeping chams for quite some time. And based on the posts ive seen from stefan he doesnt ask the type questions you do. You are asking about basic husbandry issues.

Can we not just supply some helpful information instead of causing more and more fights? I know you will tell me its not about the persons feelings but about the better care of the chameleons, but please, is this not getting a bit out of hand????

I am 15 and have been keeping chameleons for almost 4 years, I have bred my chams twice, I have had the worst accidents and problems due to my husbandary mistakes and lack of knowledge, I think we have all messed up somewhere, for me it was even harder to find out how to look after them properely as I live in S.A and I didnt have internet before!

Froggthecham when did the breeding age change from atleast 10 months to now 18 months? Just curious do you comment from experience? I only bred my females when they were almost 3 years of age, which to be honest was a mistake, they were my first chameleons and because I did not care of them as good as what I would of if I had the knowledge that I do now they were not very healthy to be breeders (1 female died and the other is still living) becuase of that the hatchlings I had from the one female were weak, out of the 17 eggs I had 10 healthy babies came out. And the same female laid a clutch in March of about 35 eggs, only 4 ended up fertile and 1 of those fertile eggs died a few weeks ago, so far 2 of the eggs are bigger than the 3rd.

ChameleonRave theres no need to get rid of your chams. Keep them and learn everything you can, you are starting off way better than what I did and you are asking the questions I should of asked in the beginning if I had known about this site.

Thanks for the help. I have talked to my brother and he wants to help find BETTER homes for them with me. Sadly this is where I draw the line. You are one helpful person! All these selfish idiots do is manipulate people and act like they are your friend and then savagel attack you from behind. I simpl. Asked a ? And they don't have the decency to reply with a justifiable answer!? Really how rude are you people!? Someone asks a question in breeding and what they need for that proccess and than you turn around and say hey your a horrible keeper and imply that I am a dumba$$! Well news for you! Your never going to get anywhere in life treatin people the way some of you act toward others. An I am ashamed at seeing "grown adults" if they want to call themselves that act like they are in kindergarten! The forums where more than likely not made for attacking people on their threads when they ask a question! Also so what if Stefan didn't ask a question I did! People minds think differently! And to whomever said I need to do more research on females, but If I were to ask a question than I would probably get attacked and called a horrible keeper again! And it probably wouldn't be like Stefans questions so let's bully someone else into thinking they are incompitant! Well guess again! You messed with the wrong person! I'm done here hope you all can figure out "how to be nice" if possible at all. And I am now getting rid of my chams. And if someone says don't listen to them. Just inore it. If I dare post a thread on here it will get ransacked with rude remarks! That is all. And thanks again chameleonneeds :) you are very kind!

Zach, i know we have had our up's and down's and people gave you a hard time. I for one did in the beginning and am sorry for that and im glad you got over it because i didnt mean to get you upset. Zach you are showing that you care for your chams and we can all see that whether we like it or not. I just think people are not satisfied with the questions you ask but really is there a rule thats say you cant ask any kind of questions? No. So i say keep your head up high and stay strong for Darwin and Delilah. They look fantastic and im sure you can help them stay that way.

I forgot to say that i was in this position before and i even made a thread where i said im goign to leave...well with a lot of peoples positive comments..i stayed. Whether others liked me or not. My dad taught me many things...but one thing i remember the most was to never cae what others think of you and what you are capable of doing. Do what you think is best.

Best Regards.

Thanks for the kind words....

I would not say that Stefan did not ask questions such as what you did. He probably asked thousands more, and that is why he is so good with chams, he did ask questions, where would he be if he did not? He might have not asked questions on the forum but he did talk to many other breeders before breeding chameleons, infact Stefan bred his female veiled with another breeders male.

Sorry to drag your name in Stefan! I am just putting a point across.:p

And I was also in this same position, sortof. Im sure a LOT of people have been.

Its fine. You bring up a very good point. Zach, we learn from our mistakes and ask questions :)

well first of all don't be sorry! you didn't do anything! and where do they come off thinking ik very little of chams? i didn't plan on breeding them for a year or 6 months. after i moved and was settled in my new home. all i wanted was help... making sure if the time comes to mate them (not for fun) but to get some enjoyment and exprience and knowledge out of it and then they turned on me and starting to imply i am not a fit owner of any kind, yes i had trouble with my Chams food, but now they are happily munching on dubias, supers, and crickets. they obviously need a lesson or two in manners. you are alright.. i love to get your critisism because ive kind of talked to you about chams for sometime now. i love to get advice but attacking me on the thread about a question? thats just utterly rude! what happened to MANNERS with most of them? they think because they have kept them longer than other means the have the right to bully others.? and for Delilah and Darwins sakes I won't give up but its hard when people tell you keep trying and the next minute get put down about it.

well i realize that Stefan is smarter with Chams with me and all, but what they say about me keeping mine and attempting to breed them when they are ready? my female is almost a year and this winter she is ready to try and breed. so i would like to try but i need the info and the supplies and thats what part of this thread is to get knowledge from it and not jump in blinsidedly and go wtf am i suppose to do now?!

Here is a good start. http://raisingkittytheveiledchameleon.blogspot.com/2007/12/breeding.html One thing I will say is to make sure your females are not over fed because they will produce way to many eggs and can become eggbound. There is lots of information on breeding veileds on the forums and the internet. Another good suggestion is to start saving up now because crickets are not cheap and veileds can produce large clutches.

thanks so very much! i will be looking into that tonight! :)
