basking temp baby Panther

Hi there!

Im new to the forum and have a quick question about basking temps before my baby panther arrives. I do have a Yemen chameleon which ive had for around 2 years now, I have a savannah monitor just under a year and have kept bearded dragons previously aswell, so im not new to keeping reptiles but this has just popped into my head as ive never really thought about it before.

The panther shall be in an exo terra glass viv and the ambient inside is at 85f at the moment without a basking light on. Now would I still need to provide an over head basking light on days where the room ambient is equal to the desired basking temperature or could he metabolize without an over head heat source?

Thanks in advance,

Andy

That really is too high for an ambient. You ambient should be around 75 and your basking around 85-90.

The room is not always that warm but for times when it is I suppose I could just open a window and keep the light on then lol cheers problem solved :p

You said "baby" panther, correct? Just how old? The younger it is, the lower the basking temp. Adult panthers can sustain basking temps from 90's to 100, but will require a much lower ambient temp to regulate when needed.

If your baby is less than 4 months old, you'll cook him at those temps.

Have no idea as of yet, spoke to a pet shop owner who said he knew a reputable breeder who should have some. So just waiting to hear back some time this week on the locale, age and delivery.

If it is younger I can just leave a window open or the heating in the room off during the day.
