do I have to bleach bamboo plant shafts from home depot and dry them like I do branches I find outside or just wash them with soap and water before I put them in my cage

I didn't wash mine, but I've since got rid of them. They were a bit slippery, and with all the misting, they split at the ends where they were secured to the screen. All that water didn't do them a lot of good!
Then I tried some wooden dowels of various thicknesses. They were a bit slippery too, for my cham's feet, and got a bit moldy looking. So, they're gone too. Now I'm using Bend a Branch,,and some plastic vine, and a couple of real branches that were baked. She's much happier with these.
Just trying to save you some steps in finding the perfect climbing support!

I wouldn't use bamboo. Geckos can latch on to them but the way chameleon feet are shaped, bamboo would be to smooth of a surface for them to grip.
