Baby veiled sleeps all day? No movement

My baby veiled is not active during the day. Its been 5 days since i bought him and nothing. He is about 3-4 weeks old. I have not seen him eat or drink although it could be that hes only eating at night because i cannot seem to find the crickets.
I have him in a 16x16x30
I believe the bulb i have is only 60 watts. I am going to the store to buy a basking bulb and fixture today that is 75 watts and a nightlight
I have a fountain that drips water all day and i mist the plants every couple hours for about 30 seconds
I have contacted the store where i bought him at and they say i need the 75 watt basking bulb which is what I'm getting
Is There Anything That You guys think could be wrong with him or something that I'm doing? Please Help!! :(

Yep fill out the ask for help form. You should not have been sold a cham that young. You sldo dont need a night light and the 60watt should be giving out enough heat.

You need a calcium without d3 to dust on every feeding, a calcium with d3 for twice a month, and a multivitamin twice a month. waht you probably have is the calcium with d3.

You need a UVB bulb too. without it, your cham will develop metabolic bone disease. No light ats night, this can interrupt their sleep schedule.

Around 70 degrees although i think my thermometer might be broken get a digitial therm and test your basking temp. it should be no more than 85 for his age. any more and youll cook him.

Way to be young to be sold. Should be at least a month old to be sold

Is this the only supplement you are using? He should be having calcium without D3 everyday, Calcium with D3 twice a month and multivitamins twice a month also

30 seconds isn't long enough to create a drinking response. Try and mist for at least 5 minutes. If all fails, try a shower, allow the mist from a shower to bounce off the walls onto the cham that sits on a plant.

Where is your UVB? There is no mention of that also no night light. They need total darkness to sleep

Basking should be 85F and rest of the cage mid to low 70F. Use a digital thermometer.

Don't leave the food in at night, he should only be eating in the day, they need heat to digest their food.

EDIT: camimon beat me to it but we're basically saying the same thing :)

Here's some information I hope will help you with supplementing, etc.....
Appropriate cage temperatures aid in digestion and thus play a part indirectly in nutrient absorption.

Exposure to UVB from either direct sunlight or a proper UVB light allows the chameleon to produce D3 so that it can use the calcium in its system to make/keep the bones strong and be used in other systems in the chameleon as well. The UVB should not pass through glass or plastic no matter whether its from the sun or the UVB light. The most often recommended UVB light is the long linear fluorescent Repti-sun 5.0 tube light. Some of the compacts, spirals and tube lights have caused health issues, but so far there have been no bad reports against this one.

A wide variety of insects that have been well fed and gutloaded should be fed to it.

Since many of the feeder insects we use in captivity have a poor ratio of calcium to phosphorus in them, its important to dust the insects just before you feed them to the chameleon at most feedings with a phos.-free calcium powder to help make up for it. (I use Rep-cal phosphorus-free calcium).

If you also dust twice a month with a phos.-free calcium/D3 powder it will ensure that your chameleon gets some D3 without overdoing it. It leaves the chameleon to produce the rest of what it needs through its exposure to the UVB light. D3 from supplements can build up in the system but D3 produced from exposure to UVB shouldn't as long as the chameleon can move in and out of it. (I use Rep-cal phos.-free calcium/D3).

Dusting twice a month as well with a vitamin powder that contains a beta carotene (prOformed) source of vitamin A will ensure that the chameleon gets some vitamins without the danger of overdosing the vitamin A. PrEformed sources of vitamin A can build up in the system and may prevent the D3 from doing its job and push the chameleon towards MBD. However, there is controversy as to whether all/any chameleons can convert the beta carotene and so some people give some prEformed vitamin A once in a while. (I use herptivite which has beta carotene.)

Gutloading/feeding the insects well helps to provide what the chameleon needs. I gutload crickets, roaches, locusts, superworms, etc. with an assortment of greens (dandelions, kale, collards, endive, escarole, mustard greens, etc.) and veggies (carrots, squash, sweet potato, sweet red pepper, zucchini, etc.)

Calcium, phos., D3 and vitamin A are important players in bone health and other systems in the chameleon (muscles, etc.) and they need to be in balance. When trying to balance them, you need to look at the supplements, what you feed the insects and what you feed the chameleon.
Please note that various supplements have various amounts of D3 and vitamin A and so some can be given more often than others. The idea still is not to overdo the fat soluble vitamins like D3 and prEformed vitamin A.

I just talked to the associate again and he told me to get a uvb bulb. i found one on amazon and told him about it, he said that one is good for the chameleon

I am getting the 13 watt and also a 75 watt heat bulb
Do you guys have any links or sites where i can gets the bulbs and fixture for cheap?
 
A 5.0 is better and more recommended than a 10.0. The person you got him from should have told you this, sounds to me the seller didn't have knowledge him/herself :(

A reptisun linear bulb is better. can't really recommend fixtures as I'm in the UK and will be different than the US.

As for your cage, the poor baby has no places to hide, add some more plants, even a fiscus, pothos as veilds sometimes munch on plants. If they no place to hide, they can become stressed
 
I had the same problem with my first cham that was sold to me at the same age as yours.... It slepped all day and didnt move it ended up dieing a week later... Now dont get me wrong im not sayong yours is going to die..... Ive head about some people putting them in glass tanks thiss young.. Because they need high humidity... Its what i was told..
 
I also had a very young cham that did the same thing and almost died. You need to get a UVB bulb asap and make sure he can easily get 6-12inches away from the uvb. He needs the uvb to digest his food to get energy. Without the uvb he has no food/energy in order to move around and act normal. Good luck
 
Although there is a natural die-off of young chameleons it could be that your temperatures are too low. You said..."Around 70 degrees although i think my thermometer might be broken"...the temperature should be in the high 70's in most of the cage with the warmest area being in the low 80'sF.

Aussie said..."He needs the uvb to digest his food to get energy"...he needs the UVB to allow his body to produce D3 so he can use the calcium in his diet...among other things.

UPDATE: Okay so i just bought a 5.0 13 watt uvb bulb today from the local petsmart. This is what the guy recomended me and also I purchased a 50 watt basking bulb. He said to try out the 50 watt for now and see how he reacts although to me it seemed to low but he also said i have 60 days to get an exchange for a 75 watt. What do you think? I will post another update tomorrow after school. Hopefully the uvb and basking will make him more active
Should i stay with the 50 watt basking or get the 75? and the uvb should i stay or get a 26 watt or anything else?
 
For basking, most of us use household incandescents, like you can find at the grocery store. That way, you can have different strengths and switch them around. However, we've all used the bulbs sold by the pet stores. My guess is you're going to want the 75 watt, but the only way to know is to check the temperature.

It's a bit hard to tell from your picture how big your chameleon is. Maybe you could put a ruler on the table and try again? Or pose him on something we can all agree is a certain size like a soda can?
 
UPDATE: I Just took out my chameleon and he really isnt looking so well. I think i might just have to take him back to the store because when i took him out, again he was with both eyes closed and i also noticed when he does wake up, he only opens one eye only. Anyway when i took him out, he started leaning over on one side like if he was too weak to keep his balance. Im started to think he might have a disease. If by tomorrow after school hes not moving around, im going to take him back
Plus the store health garantee is only 7 days which tomorrow is the 7th day so i have to act fast.

Ahh yes very true, sorry if my reply was vague, I was just trying to simplify it so the op could understand that his little cham needs the uvb asap.



And @ltgorewrath - I would suggest just taking your cham back to the store. I did that for mine when he was dying like that and they fixed him back up and let him grow up for a couple weeks. When I brought him home again he was thriving from then on. I think we both probably had stores sell us chams that were too young.
 
Sadly, I agree that the chameleon should go back to the store. I have my doubts as to whether the store will be able to save it, but Ltgorewrath should get an older chameleon in exchange.

Yeah hopefully they have older. I actually wanted an older one but they didnt have any at the time. Then i was just so excited i ended up getting the smallest one in the hole store because he was the only male. I specifically wanted a male because i heard they were easier to handle. Im just going to have to take him back and hopefully get another because i bought the whole set up any lights and everything

I agree with the "get a male" sentiment. I think females are for experienced chameleon keepers (I've had one, lost her...now have males).

Please do let the people here help you with your new chameleon.
