I have just had non-stop thinking about these cute little critters, but sadly California is evil, cold, and mean(not really:p) and wont let us own a hedgie.. so if anyone has one..... many people, obviously including me, would love to see...:D :) :p ;)

I've got an albino called Pickles, he's very cute but he hates everyone. I let him run around the house catching spiders & escaped crickets.

lucky! i have wanted one for sooooo long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe ill move to oregon..... not really... or maybe????

aww that is so cute! what type is yours... African Pygmy, Algerian, or Four-toed..... asking since there ae wild ones in europe

He's a pygmy afican. Our wild hedgehogs are protected under the Wildlife and countryside Act, so unless they need to be rescued, you can't keep them as pets. They're about 3 times bigger than Pickles and generally much friendlier!

thats huge! they are already pretty large(compared to hamsters and mice) so they must be really big! that must be cool seeing hedgehogs in the wild.... ive only seen one in person and that was at a zoo

it's funny, cos here a hedgehog is just a hedgehog, don't get me wrong, everyone loves our wild hedgies, we feed them & look after them, but we don't think too much of it when we see one. If I saw a racoon, however, I'd be awe-struck & would only see one in a zoo. Guess you get used to your local wildlife!

Having said that, it's pretty cool to find 1 in the garden chatting to your cat, cos the cat never quite understands why the hedgie is prickly. it's also always nice to rescue them from the road- they don't understand the highway code. With warmer winters they don't get fat enough to hibernate or they have litters too early in the year & that's why we have hedgehog rescue centres

That's really cool! And like you said u get used to local wildlife... Here when we see a hedgehog most people think that it's a porcupine:rolleyes: but many people say that is the cites thing I've ever seen! My mom thought both of those things and I'm like mom it's a hedgehog of a porcupine! And I have too explain the differences to her.... But it's fun! Sadly... I may never own one but it should be fun if I go to some countries where hedges are wild and see them free roam! And not to be asking too much but how much do hedges cost in the UK? Here they cost $100 - $300, which is £64-£192

My boy was £105, which I thought was a bargain :D.

It's quite rare to see them roam cos they're nocturnal. I usually hear them snuffling around on the lawn late at night or making noises at my cat. I always have to pick them up for a cuddle cos it feels special to see one, not that the hedgehogs appreciate that! Lol

I'd love to see a wild porcupine, but I can't see how they look like hedgehogs lol I'd love to see a racoon even more, they're so cool

£105! That is pretty cheap here! Like $130! I always thought that it was very interesting on how in the 1980s kids in Africa were paid about 50 cents to collect as many hedgehogs as they found and when they were imported to countries the were mocked up to like $150-$500, but now they have settled at the not-so-small payment of about $150. Also people here don't even enjoy raccoons especially since they get into ur food and everything.... I don't really know if there even are any wild porcupines anymore because I've only seen them zoos....

We have porcupines all around up here. People think of them as being very arboreal but I have also seen them farther north where there are few large trees at all. They don't have the tiny cute faces hedgies do...they look like prickly beavers to me. Big buck teeth and heavy snouts. Heavy stumpy clawed feet for climbing.

Porkies picked up as orphans are pretty sweet I've read, but they are very destructive as they are rodents with those constantly growing incisors. Chew up anything with salt content (doors, wooden handled tools, weatherstripping, powerlines). It is risky to make friends with a local wild one as it might select your attic for a den in friendly return. They are very noisy...screams in the night. Plus there's the whole quill worry. At least with a hedgie the quills aren't left embedded in your skin when you pick them up.
