24 Sambava eggs !

Ramina, our older female Sambava, laid 24 super-white eggs on Thanksgiving day. They are SO different from the Veiled eggs our Matisse laid. Ramina's are bright white and calcified like chicken eggs. Since laying them she has been eating like a pig and drinking very well. My question is this- She still has her gravid coloring. Is this normal? She weighed 90 grams right before she mated. After laying her eggs she weighed 80 grams (she stopped eating 2-3 days before laying). So, she lost her egg weight, plus 10 grams of body weight during her pregnancy/delivery. After laying her eggs (in the large trashcan method) she covered them completely and went back up into her little tree to sleep. She does not appear to have eggs inside her, but she does still have that dark body with large peachy-orangey spots. Here is a photo. I realize her belly looks full in this photo- but she was always a very round-bellied girl. When she stretches out, her belly flattens. I very gently palpated her belly and felt no eggs.

How long before she returns to female panther colors? Or is it possible she retained little eggs? Or, does this coloring indicate she retained sperm and is producing another clutch? Thank you for your help.

Congrates! It's always nice to see the pictures of the hard working females too :D

That's awesome that she's back to normal eating like a little piggy. With her still showing gravid coloration, it's very possible that she has retained sperm and is going to start another clutch of eggs. Keep her well fed and food well dusted :)

Thank you, Chameleontario, for the helpful advice.

Yes, Fate X, I should have explained more about those veiled eggs. The veiled was well into her eggs when we purchased her and showing intense receptive coloring. She mated with our male and deposited her eggs about 20 days later. They were mostly creamy yellow, and had an ultra smooth, shiny, almost oily appearance (even though she'd been eating very well, and her food was dusted). We are treating them just like good fertilized eggs, anyway, and are hoping for the best. The eggs are 6 weeks and 3 days old. None has shriveled up or collapsed, although a few have grown fuzzy (we clean off the fuzz). The veiled Mom is doing very well.

why are the eggs SO different?

i thought you meant the eggs needs were different when incubating like temps, humidity etc.i have a little sambava experiment im working on now.i hope to have some first eggs from my girl soon.

We are doing the veiled eggs at 78F constant temp. The Sambava eggs are in an incubator, started at 68F. Planning to do that for about 3 months and then gradually raise the temp. The veiled eggs are in perlite, and the Sambava eggs are in vermiculite.

Congratulations!

Congratulations! Your girl is beautiful. The velvety brown/peach colors of a gravid female are spectacular in my opinion. She may have a second clutch in her. You would not necessarily be able to feel them because they need time before they are laid. If there is no second clutch coming, it takes time for them to change from gravid colors. It doesn't happen overnight. It's part of the process of becoming receptive again. And they are not going to be ready to breed again physically for at least another month. Their colors will gradually change to that peachy pink receptive color. It's been my experience that not all females go back to their original virgin receptive colors. It's like some virgins have their own special color. Once bred the coloration is just a little different. Good job Ramina!

Thank you for the kind words. I realized, in my concern for the mother, that I did not mention the sire of the clutch. He's a male we purchased from PamsChams that is a grandson of Loki, which she purchased from Jamie, who got him from Tyler, who confirmed for us that it is indeed Loki's grandson.

He is still quite young and not yet into his full colors. It was kind of funny watching them mate, because He rode around on her back like a monkey for awhile before he finally skooted into position and got down to business. :D

She is quite young herself. We got her at 10 months old. She is over a year old now and this was her first time with a male.

I love working with Sambavas. They are very gentle and sweet, good eaters and drinkers. And lovely to look at, too!

Great Pictures :)

Great pictures! They will produce some beautiful babies. Is that the pair you got at the Puyallup show? I could actually visualize your description of him riding her around like a monkey! LOL! He does have that young look to him. Lucky boy :)

No, this is an older Sambava female, considerably larger than the little girl I got at the show. We purchased her from a couple in Lakewood, WA, along with Wolfgang (male veiled), and an ambanja/nosey be (named Pegasus) sired by the Kammer's Bilbo. The Sambava female from the show is a little smaller than this male, and weighs about 55-60g now. The Sambava Ramina (of the 24 eggs) weighs 80-90 grams. Rantabe (the male Sambava) weighs 75g. The little girl from the show is named Sirama. Sirama is just now beginning to show some of the receptive coloration.

Yes, they are pure Sambava. Rantabe (grandson from the Loki line) fired up at me today when I had his cage door open, and for the first time I saw him fire up with the reds and orangey-yellows all over. Ramina is pure Sambava too, but I don't have photos of her dam and sire. We are expecting some truly beautiful babies from this couple, should all go well. I guess we'll know in about 8 months.

I looked at your gallery but I think I just saw your veileds. That Sonic is a real looker! Has he sired any hatchlings?
