1/8 size crickets, New Cham owner

Hi guys,

Just recently got my 500 1/8 crickets and my Kammer nosy be (less than 3 months old) just arrive today. It looks like he could handle 1/4 crickets easy and 1/8 seem way too small for him. I think I made a mistake getting 1/8, I can't have my 1/4 crickets order until Monday, will he be ok with 1/8? Or is there somewhere I could get 1/4 crickets overnight for Friday?

1/8 are like little ants, will he get full with just the recommended 10-12 crickets per day? I have a hard time trying to get 10 1/8 crickets in the cup. I have been at work all day, only notice 6 crickets out of the 10 is left in the big red plastic cup. Should I get a smaller cup?

I have been lurking and reading on the forum with various topics. I couldn't figure this out. Any advices would be great. Thanks

i get the 1/8 size for my 3mo veiled. yeah he can eat bigger but im buying 1000 of them at a time.. by the time my cham eats them all, they will be about 1/4th size. its recommended to buy one size smaller than he can eat for this reason.

feed him 10-15 1/8th crickets a day and he should be good.

an easy way of getting crickets from the cricket keeper to a container for dusting is to put some small sections of toilet paper rolls inside. everytime you need to feed just pick up one of those sections of roll and shake them into a container with a lid (with some suppliments) untill you have roughly 10 of them. shake that container untill all the crickets are dusted. then simply pour them out into a feeding dish. this is how i do it.

you want the cup/dish to be small enough for the cham to reach in with his tongue and grab them and big enough for the crickets not to jump out.

hope this helps:D

Thanks for the quick reply, awesome forums :), I feel so much better now. I thought I got it all wrong with the 1/8.

when i recieved my first order of 1/8th crickets i was in the same mindset as you. thinking WOW these are tiny and how the heck will he even get full. i first just stuck about 20 in there and whatched how many he ate. he ate 13 of them and from now on i have been sticking no more than 15 in his dish.

dont worry they will grow.:D

The crickets will grow quickly and if you want them to grow quicker keep them 90-95 degrees and in one week they will be about 1/4" with enough food and water.

Yeah, they'll do fine with smaller as long as you feed more. If you are buying in bulk for a small number of chameleons it's sort of a requirement that you start with "too small" go through "just right" and end up at "the biggest acceptable".
